What does "rally monkey" mean?

I hope that I’m not embarrassing myself by asking this, but my hubby just said that he’s been hearing “monkey rally” a lot recently on TV. Does anyone know the origin and meaning?

One of the teams in the World Series (baseball) has a monkey that they use to rally the crowd. Apparently it has a team outfit and holds up signs. That’s all I know (I don’t even know what teams are (were - is it over?) in the Series this year, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to find out, if you care to know more…

Thank you! The Series isn’t over yet…

A recent discussion of the history and meaning of the rally monkey is here.

Yes, as I understand it, the Angels have a monkey that wears a small uniform that shows up in the later part of the games if they are behind. It initially was supposed to be something of a joke, but it took of and became quite a phenomenon, and even the Angels don’t really understand it, but the crowd seems to go apeshit (pardon the pun) over the rally monkey, and they seem to get a charge from it too.

As I heard it explained during the pennant race, which was the first time I’d heard of it, as I don’t follow the Angels, it is an endangered species monkey, and (this part is fuzzy) something about it involves donations to an endangered species fund, so being in So. CA, it is especially a big deal.

Anyway, that is why during the games there are monkey masks and gorilla suits all over the place. And yeah, “Rally Monkey” is a pretty cool catch phrase.

I ate it.

See sig.
