I’ve been accused of doing it, and I have no idea what it means!
A “sock puppet” is a second account or screen name, classically used for the purpose of saying “Me too!” or “Way to go!” to the posts of one’s other identity (although some people will actually use them to argue with themselves). Second identities may also be used to say things which the user does not wish to say under his or her primary identity–to flame another poster, for example. Although some boards permit or even encourage them, they have a rather obvious potential for abuse, and the SDMB has a strict rule against having a second identity on the board under any circumstances.
This question really belongs more in ATMB than in GQ. I would move it there, but questions about this sort of topic tend to attract the attention of some people with too much time on their hands who enjoy (among other things) breaking the above rule, so I’ll just close the thread.

It’s when a person starts two accounts which appear to be different individuals. Usually personality #1 makes a statement and personality #2 enters to support that statement. A technique of making oneself seem to hold a popular opinion.
