What does the high pitched barks these dogs are making indicate?

Video One

Video Two

This couple has captured an armadillo in trash can. One of the dogs looking at the captured animal in video 2 is making a weird, high pitched whining bark. What does this noise indicate? Fear, excitement, anxiety… what?

That’s excitement! Many dogs will make those sorts of noises when excited to meet another dog or animal.

I love dogs, but I hate that video. Armadillos are about the most harmless animal out there, and this one was being terrorized. Was it dead in that second video, or just playing dead?

Anyway, yeah, my dog makes those noises when he sees a kitty. I think it’s excitement combined with confusion, like “Another animal! What is it? I don’t know what it is! What do you want me to do with it? Should I kill it? Can I eat it? Can I play with it?”

Stuff like that.

I have no idea what the sound indicates . . . but what a gorgeous and adorable dog.

<inner 5 year old> I want a cute doggie with pretty ears like that! </inner 5 year old>

I have seen several dogs that have barked themselves silly until their bark increased in pitch. For dog that don’t normally bark a lot, it might not take much for them to get to that state where the pitch changes. Not to say that dogs can’t alter the pitch for other reasons though.

I’m curious, I’m excited, I WAnna SEEE!! Lemmeeeee Seee!!! I can smell it, I can hear it…Lemmeeee SEE IT!! Come on, come on!! Come ON!!!

Damn, that video just drove my dogs crazy!

That’s why I’m not opening it. My dogs will go into high pitched whines and barks just with me singing.

ETA: In that context, I think it means “Pack leader is singing. We should, too. Let’s get excited so we can. Oh, wait, now we’re too excited to stop.”

My dogs are little yappy things, but one has what we call the “squirrel bark” - it’s much higher pitched, yelpy and squealy and almost breathless, and I have never heard her make that noise unless she has spotted a squirrel.

I felt really sorry for that armadillo, though. :frowning:
