Here’s my proposed budget for $750/child/day. Of course I’m only proposing that I’d look after 4 kids - So just imagine that there are a bunch of people like me, each one of them responsible for 4 kids.

4 kids, one year, $750/day/kid

budget = $1,095,000

Salary – me, executive director of child procurement and oversight = $150,000
Assistant director and staff overseer (my spouse) = $75,000
Cook – I don’t like cooking. 20 hours/week @$30/hour = $31,200
Cleaning – I don’t like cleaning. 20 hours/week @$30/hour = $31,200
Gardening/pool maintenance – I will be too busy. 20 hours/week @$30/hour = $31,200
Nanny – someone needs to actually look after the kids. I’m busy doing… executive things. = $50,000/year for really good nanny.
Nanny can stay in the 6th bedroom with an ensuite.
Psychologist/counselling. Probably a good thing for these kids $200/hour, 3 hours/week/child for one full year = $124,800. A big ticket item, but worth it, I think.

Private school tuition. I think they deserve this, right? $10,000 per child = $40,000

Music lessons, art lessons, swimming lessons… these things are good for kids. $5,000/kid = $20,000

Platinum family golf club membership at Painted Dunes in El Paso = $2400. Well worth it I say.
Set of clubs for me and spouse = $2400
Set of clubs for all 4 kids = $2000

But it’s also become an educational experience on how to properly use a toilet.

Hanging in every bathroom, above every toilet, is an instructional sign, titled “Keep This Toilet Clean,” which offers five directives in a quest for sanitary restroom conditions. Each instruction is paired with a graphic, if humorous, illustration:

1. Sit on the toilet during use.

2. DO NOT stand on the toilet.

3. DO NOT use the floor. Use the toilet.

4. Put used toilet paper in the toilet.

5. DO NOT put trash in the toilet. Use the trash can.

Like all eyebrow-raising rules, there always seems to be some infamous backstory. The case of Arches’ puzzling bathroom signs is no exception.

“That sign is up there because some of our foreign visitors are accustomed to what we call a ‘squat toilet,’” said park superintendent Kate Cannon, carefully trying not to disrespect certain visitors while at the same time being a good sport for this story.

“And sometimes when they use our more standard toilets, they’re not comfortable with them. So, they do various things that make it more comfortable for them to use the standard toilets.”

I did a Google image search for “Arches bathroom sign” because I recalled seeing them there last time I visited. I found a good picture of it, and followed the link to get an image URL. I have no idea about the source’s political leanings, but whatever they may be, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a documented reality that some foreigners “don’t even know nuthin’ 'bout 'murican terlits” (to borrow an early poster’s humorous phrasing). They sometimes cause damage to the facilities and leave behind disgusting messes.

I admit, it’s probably not as common as, say, a garbage disposal, but they’re pretty standard in most detention facilities, AFAIK. I’ve seen online posts where guards have said they’ve repeatedly had to tell illegal immigrants that it was ok to drink the water out of the top, that it was not, actually, dirty toilet water, but that there were separate lines to service each function. I can see how someone might not trust them and perhaps even report to a certain emotional congressperson that the guard told them to drink out of the toilet, who might then tweet about it and blow a little miscommunication / misunderstanding way out of proportion.

In the Caribbean some of the waste systems cannot handle toilet paper, so trash cans are supplied for it. Often Americans create disgusting messes because they do not know “nuthin bout Caribbean terlits” despite adequate explanatory signage (in French).
