I know it’s when you get hit on the head you can get concussed. But what actually happens? Is your brain damaged?
Concussion (of the brain) means loss of consciousness as the result of a blow to the head. In mild concussion, there is transient loss of consciousness with possible impairment of the higher mental functions, such as retrograde amnesia nd emotional lability. In severe concussion, there is prolonged unconsiousness with impairment of the functions of the brain stem, such as transient loss of respiratory reflex, vasomotor activity, and dilation of the pupils.
- Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary * 25th Edition (1974). Hey, it’s an old one, but it’s all I have.
So, was I concussed:
Last Monday I was at my Taekwon-do training and was sparring and got hit with a really big punch to the head. The punch really followed through, and my brain felt really strange like it moved in my skull. For a couple seconds after the punch I couldnt really think very well and I just nodded when asked if I was alright. Kind of like when you watch a boxing match and a fighter gets hit with a big one and after keeps nodding and saying he’s ok to the ref.
Anyway. My head has felt sore all week. Sort of like my brain’s bruised and has swollen a bit. I’ve been taking Ibuprofen to reduce any swelling, and I didnt train on Thursday. My head still doesnt feel right. Any advice?
I think that’s a matter of semantics. According to the source I quoted, No; but I think Yes in common parlance. What’s important is the extent of your injury. Does sound like your brain was bruised. You may want to consider a CAT scan or MRI just to make sure you have no other damage. Caveat: IANAMD
Yes. How did you find out!? Does it show?
