I look up to my mother. She suffers from many medical maladies, including a chronic, intractable migraine that literally hasn’t gone away for a moment for the last 11 years; COPD; sleep apnea; type-2 diabetes; lymphedema; and probably a couple other problems I can’t think of right now. She’s in constant pain and discomfort, but you’d never know that from talking to her. She’s one of the most loving people I know, and the way she treats people publicly is the exact same way she is at home.
I look up to my sister, three years younger. She suffers from mental illness and has a bum leg that, if it gets much worse, may need to be amputated. But she still goes to work every day, maintains a residence by herself, drives, takes care of two cats, and has a “pack” of friends who love and support her.
I look up to my pastor, who’s announced that he’s going to be retiring on the first of October this year after 25 years with our church. He’s been there for me for 10 years, always willing to lend a hand when things got rough for me and my mother. He’s been a Loyal Friend and True.
I looked up to Nee-Nee and Pop-Pop, my dad’s parents; they were perhaps the most all-loving people I’ve ever met. Pop-Pop and Dad really helped inspire my love of music which lasts to this day. I still remember sitting at the piano bench with Pop-Pop, singing “Angels We Have Heard on High” with him at a tender young age. Nee-Nee was just plain fun; I loved playing cards with her.
What figures in your life, past and present, do you look up to?
