I’ll eat or try almost anything.
Won’t. Touch. Mushrooms.
I’ll eat or try almost anything.
Won’t. Touch. Mushrooms.
Not even the magic variety?
Can I shake your hand?
The funny thing is although I find offal not fit for human consumption I do like haggis.
Baring my soul here…
I have some full-blown food phobias that people may be interested in reading. I’m not sure if that is the idea of the OP question, because I would also turn down “normal” gross items like brains and insects, but common foods is a more interesting topic.
My phobia is so severe that it creeps me out just to write or read these words, but here goes (in the name of science), in grossest-first order:
[ul]
[li]olives[/li][li]peas[/li][li]green beans[/li][li]other beans[/li][li]any other boiled vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, brussel sprouts, and carrots[/li][li]corn (only kerneled or on the cob)[/li][li]canned white mushrooms[/li][/ul]
These are irrational fears; I don’t even know what these things taste like because I won’t eat them. In some cases I am repelled by the odor–and always by the sight. For just one example of irrationality, I accidentally ate some hummus dip once, and I thought it was good, but if I know what it is (or suspect it), I can’t make myself eat it.
So it would seem I’m mainly in the anti-veggie camp, but I really enjoy most veggies raw, when they’re crisp and don’t give off a noisome smell.
My list used to be a lot longer, but it shrank as I grew older and encountered more foods in a gourmet preparation–I’m very sensitive to the presentation and quality.
Over the years, I’ve taken an interest in extreme food aversions because of my own. I’m always curious when people say they don’t like something, and I’ve tried make note of them and categorize them. So far it seems pretty diverse and personal, but there are at least four main categories that I have identified that people hate:
1) Vegetables
Especially boiled, watery preparations, or mixtures.
2) Sauces
These people are turned off by vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard, salad dressing, sour cream, and most sauces and complex liquids.
3) Seafood
Although some people hate fish and like shellfish, while it’s the other way around for others. Many fear both categories.
4) Meat
There are a variety of reasons that people fear eating meat: some think it’s bad for you, some think it’s murder, and some are just grossed out by blood.
Specific dislikes such as cilantro, cantaloupe, mushrooms, or anchovies seem to be a separate phenomenon–just a simple distaste.
So which category are you in, or are there more?
