I was thinking about this the other day and found it slightly amusing:
The Grammar Elitist Forum: It would be a general discussion forum. You could talk about anything from A to Z. The catch would be that if you made one grammatical mistake,(no matter how small, typos, wrong punctuation, misspelling, etc…) you would be banned from posting in that forum for one year.
You could still continue to read, you just wouldn’t be able to post. And in a perfect world, you could also have some sort of counter there to show how many years you’ve gone with out getting banned.
And yes, I know full well that I would get banned on the first day!
Still though, it would be a fun train wreck to watch.
Mods of course would be immune from any banning from this forum.
I’d like to see a PROJECTS forum. Where we could ask for advice or share stories about our creative projects and new skills mastering. And we could even do group projects like reading a book together, sending a gnome around to take pictures of, video contests, etc.
Also, a CREATIVE SOLUTIONS forum. We go beyond the various debates about the current state of various issues and instead brainstorm creative solutions to them. An SDMB think tank and TED conference of sorts.
And maybe EGO TRIP. Everyone could share photos, music, videos that they made, hook up to each others Facebook and twitter feeds, maybe even do a little online matchmaking for romance or activity partners.
I’d like to see an offshoot of the Game Room that is specifically for games being played on the SDMB or being played elsewhere but using the SDMB for commentary/organization: Mafia, RPGs, Diplomacy Games, fantasy football, the poker tournaments, etc.
I like the idea of this one. I’m always halfway through some project or other that I’d love some feedback or encouragement for, or just somewhere to show off something I’m proud of. I’d feel a bit self conscious or guilty if I was to do so in MPSIMS, but a dedicated forum would be great.
Places like DeviantArt aren’t really a real back-and-forth, it’s mostly just a praise factory, and any other forums I’ve been a part of didn’t have the right vibe or have rapidly died off.
Star Trek and Doctor Who subforums for Cafe Society.
We might allow Star Wars, too.
A Swift Kick In the Rear forum for all those people posting the same things over and over in Great Debates. The posters in question wouldn’t be allowed to reply. They would have to just stand there and take their lumps.
How about a forum called “Zombie Threads” where there would only be like 2 or 3 threads in the forum both from 2002. You can go revive them as often as you want.
One that permitted posting of reasonably-scaled images and media. As deep as my respect for written communication is, and as much as I decry the devolution of web communication to 140 characters plus a klever pikchoor, and as much as I hate forums overrun with pointless images… one forum that permits media posting within stringent limits would be an asset.
I’d like to see some feature that highlighted zombie threads, especially to the first reviver - just a pop-up that says “You are posting to a topic that has been inactive for ___ months. Do you really wish to continue?” would be great. A color or icon highlight on zombie threads until 3-5 posts have been added would be useful, too.
The Box - This was an excellent idea used…elsewhere, wherein posters who can’t play well with others are sent for periods of time ranging from a week or two to forever. They can still post, but only there. It keeps the mess contained, without totally forsaking the opinions of the Boxed, who sometimes just have anger management issues.
I’d like a WAG forum. The Op for any topic started in GQ gets automatically cloned into the WAG forum and the GQ thread acquires a stern-looking link/banner with words to the effect “If your answer is about to be a complete guess, go here instead”.
Keep it so the two things are related, but separate - educated guesses that turn out to be right can be promoted across.
Oh yeah - keep all these in one place so I don’t accidentally happen upon “biggest poop” threads. I didn’t find that sort of thing funny or entertaining when I was in Junior High and I still don’t.
