What game system to get

We have an X-box and I have been disappointed in the paucity of games for children. X-box has very little that’s appropriate for a 5-yr old. When my son gets older he might be into some of the sports games, but right now we have “Sneakers” (a very easy mouse vs. rats game) and nothing else.

Hey, maybe even waiting a year, I hear the new systems arent tooooo far away!

I believe the PS3 will be the last to arrive and that is coming Christmas of 2005.

I decided to go with a playstation2 and so far I’ve been really happy. I did look at the X box, but I also noticed there weren’t any good kid games. So far, for kid titles, I’ve mostly found playstation 1 games which is part of the reason I went with ps2 to start with. The games take a while to load which only bothers me when you move up a level.

I’m still looking for a good place to get games and if anyone can suggest good 5yr old games I’d appreciate it althought that might be better suited for a new thread.

Cool that you went for the PS2.

Here are a few rated E for everyone games that we have for PS2:
Fantavision - kinda lame
Roller coaster -misskid1&2 like building theme parks
Rumble Racing - I haven’t ever played it
Super-bust-a-move- I like all bust-a-move games
Spider-man- I have never played this one either
Treasure Planet - the kids enjoy this one as well
Mojo – My new personal favorite, misskid1 has really taken a liking to it as well.
Burnout- where you crash on purpose, the more damage you cause the more points you get. I don’t think the kids have played this one
Scooby Doo, Night of 1000 Frights – misskid1 is currently working his way through this one
Rayman 2 - we have other Rayman games for PS1.
SSX- this game is about snowboarding, I don’t much care for it, but the kids like it. stormchaser and all 5 of the kids often play this.

Regular PS games (rated E games) that my kids have enjoyed:
Tetris
Tiggers Honey Hunt ( misskid3 who is 3 almost 4 loves this one )
Rayman
Rayman Brain Games
Q*Bert
Elmo’s letter adventures
Crash Bandicoot-- requires a long attention span
Mr. Domino – possibly my favorite PS game
Tom and Jerry in house trap
Barbie Explorer - ( I know you have a son, but misskid1 plays this regularly, its an adventure game. )
Tonka space station
Centipede – the classic game, plus it has another game on it
Hot Shots Golf 2 – the kids like this game a lot
Spyro – another game the requires hours, and a memory card.
Walt Disney World Quest, Magical Racing Tour – its a great racing game for kids.
I would suggest looking on ebay for games at reduced prices. I have never bought any games off ebay, but my sister in law has and has gotten some awesome deals. Also, you can always check rental stores to see if they have any used games for sale. I would also recommend getting a disc cleaner. Little fingerprints have occasionally been found on the backs of the discs here.

Have fun playing with your son, it can be a lot of fun to sit down and play games with the kids. My mom gets upset because we have so many games and game systems around, but, games aren’t always bad. They can be a fun way to learn, and enhance what has already been learned. ( thinking skills, memory, logic, comprehension, ect )

To find games, I suggest you hit Electronics Boutique, Gamestop, Babbages, or one of those types of stores. They have a good selection of new games and a huge selection of used ones (usually) at pretty decent prices.

Thank you misstee as always you’re a gentlelady and a scholarette.

I bought my 7-year old son a PS2 for Christmas. I’ve only bought him “E-rated” games for it.

I highly recommend Jak & Daxter. My son and I both love it. It’s a “Greatest Hits” game, so you can pick it up for only about $20.

He ended up with a number of other games as well, since some family members knew we were getting him a PS2, and jumped on the bandwagon. Also, his birthday was yesterday.

Anyway, he also likes Spongebob Squarepants and the Battle of Bikini Bottom and, to a lesser extent, Finding Nemo. He didn’t think much of Tak and the Power of JuJu or the Harry Potter game he got.

Get Jak & Daxter!

(BTW, there is a sequel named Jak II, but it is rated “T” and involves shooting, I understand.)

I’ve been the go-to guy for a number of my friends in deciding a system of choice.
This is how I break it down:
If you are most concerned with kid-friendly games, go GameCube.
If you’re into sports games, go PS2.
If you’re into FPS’ (first person shooters) go Xbox.

In my opinion, that’s where each system shines brightest. Personally I have an Xbox w/ a thompson drive. There are about three games that it’s supposedly will lock up on. Simpsons Road Rage (which happened to me), Dead to rights and one or two more. I rented the Simpsons game and it was OK. The other games (sorry, the full list escapes me) Aren’t ones that were supposed to be very good, so no big deal for me.

If you have any interest in playing online Xbox is the way to go. Make sure you have broadband though as a modem wont work.
