I’m going to buy a new game system today. I have been leaning toward a playstation 2, but I would like to hear some opinions on what’s out there. I have a son who just turned 5 and he really likes video games, but he can’t play most of the games I have. I’d like to get something good that has some games available for him too. Anyone have an opinion.
All consoles seem to have a pretty diverse selection of games. PS2 probably has the largest collection, followed by Xbox, and then Gamecube.
I would think that the gamecube would be the most kid friendly tho…(judging from the selection at the rental store and elsewhere) Gamecube has less of a loading time than a PS2. (oh, btw, I have a gamecube, but have tried out the other consoles at friends houses)
PS2 has a fricking huuuge selection of games IMHO, but like I said before, has a longer loading time. It can play DvDs and there’s a whole bunch of stuff you can get for it…like those Dance Dance Revolution pads (lol 5 year old playind DDR…hehe), the Eye toy, which is this interactive webcam-like game.
I suppose that all consoles probably have something for him tho.
My experience with the Xbox is too limited to have much of an opinion on except that, its bigger than other consoles…
Someone at work just told me that X-box is about the same as PS2 and has better graphics…
I have a Playstation 2 and I’d recommend it. XBox claim to have better graphics but it all depends on the game. I think Playstation has a wider variation of games available from the top companies.
If you go Xbox check this out first

and make sure you get a non-Thompson Xbox.
Thank you Ford Looks like I came to the right place for advice
You are welcome SiXSwordS. I love the Xbox, I only wish MS would have put in a quality drive right from the start.
I personally would get a Gamecube, because I’m a big fan of the Nintendo classic franchises: Metroid, Mario, Zelda, etc. There are a lot of kiddy games for the 'cube, like Mario Party, and various games based on animated TV shows, kiddy movies, etc.
That’s not to say that there aren’t games targeted at younger children on the PS2, mostly those same games as on the 'cube. With its much bigger selection there are probably a lot more kiddy games than on the 'cube.
I personally wouldn’t get an X-Box, because I don’t like buying Microsoft products if I can avoid it. The only exclusive games on the X-Box that are really good are complicated, adult games like Knights of the Old Republic, Halo, etc. that I don’t think a 5 year old would play. I believe the X-Box is also the most expensive system.
So, it’s basically a toss up between Gamecube and PS2. The gamecube is cheaper and generally has faster load times, but the PS2 has more games. I have a gamecube, and reccomend it, but really either system is good.
Xbox is technically a better system than the PS2, but I’d say to skip it for your needs. My 12 year old sister has an Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube and she never plays the Xbox. My stepdad had to actually dust it off when I visited in December - I asked why they never played it and he said “They don’t release enough kid appropriate games.” When I thought about it, he was right - it seems that they’re more into targeting me (26 year old male) than the kid market. For a 5 year old, I’d probably go Gamecube, myself. Very kid friendly and has a lot of really cool games (both kid and non-kid oriented). And it’s really cheap right now (possibly because it may not be doing well right now though, so that’s something to think about, as well)
We have all three , and would probably say that the xbox gets used the most , followed by the PS2 , and then when ever nintendo comes out with a game like metroid prime , the cube gets dusted off.
The Xbox may get used the most , only becuase of Xbox live , it really adds to the playability of a game , my only peev with the xbox live is that halo was never set up for it , so gotta wait for halo 2.
PS2 is probably a good system to get , but they have to get their online gaming up to snuff.

And, with the PS2, you can buy and play regular playstation games on it. We have a ton of kid friendly games for PS2 and PS. All of the misskids have a favorite game to play on the PS2. The younger two misskids’ faves are regular playstation games.
Hmm. I hadnt heard of this. I just checked my Xbox, and it has the Thompson drive in it (I got it the week it was released.) No problems here to report on – going on 2.5 years of happy gaming.
Until this past Christmas, I was unaware of this issue myself. Then we got Ghost Recon… we are on the second copy and it still locks up all the time, many DREs, very frustrating.
The next step is a XBox DVD cleaner, and if not successful then I may consider a Samsung replacement drive, or a new system…
The Thomson drive won’t read CD-Rs. Not a big deal unless you plan on importing music from CD-Rs to the hard drive.
I went to the store and the saleswienie said that PS2 had longer loading time and would need memory cards. The base cost of the machine was more, but the X-Box wasn’t ready to play DVD’s- you had to buy a seperate remote and receiver. I checked out the tites they had in store and found a lot more adult type titles for X-Box. It looked to me like the X-Box is set up for on line, first person shooter games.
I’m a really bad shopper when it comes to this stuff
Sounds like you need a shopper buddy… being the good hearted person I am, I volunteer to be that buddy.
Ok, ok, I just like to shop.
Seriously, of all the game systems we have, I like the PS2 the best. Memory cards aren’t that expensive.
How exactly do the memory cards work, do you need them to play all the games or just certain games? How much are they?
Can you join me this afternoon for a trip to the store?
You only need a memory card if you plan to save game settings for later use. If you just want to play and don’t care about saving settings or sessions, you don’t need a card.
Sure, as long as your driving.
You only need memory cards for the longer games. You can play for a while, save and then turn the game off. The next time you are ready to play the game you can pick up where you left off instead of having to start all over at the begining. The last memory card I bought ( IIRC) was only $12.00. Most games the misskids are games that have no need for a memory card.
