There seemed to be a number of movies in the 70’s about people getting lost in the woods and hunted by rednecks (for the purpose of this discussion - poor, backward, uneducated, southerners). You know, movies like:
Deliverence
Southern Comfort
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
And lets not forget the fun redneck movies like:
Smoky and the Bandit
Cannonball Run
Any Which Way but Loose
I think the 1970s redneck film craze was just that … a brief craze, along the lines of the “coming of age in Winnetka” films of the mid-1980s, Vietnam films of the early 1990s, and “erotic thrillers” of the mid-to-late 90s. CB radio was big and it caused the trucker subculture to emerge into the mainstream, we had a president from the deep South, and Southern rock – Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaw, ZZ Top, etc – ruled the airwaves. The 1970s were also a time when the economy of southern cities, such as Atlanta and New Orleans, boomed while northern cities languished in a long recession.
Which gets me thinking … why were there so damn many police and detective dramas on television in the 1970s?
When has there ever been a time when police and detective shows didn’t pretty much dominate the airwaves? Perhaps it’s just that we late-30-somethings+ remember that decade well.

Or maybe we just remember the cops’ hairstyles and cars.
Nowhere. They are still making redneck flicks:
Forrest Gump
Sling Blade
Black Dog
Clay Pigeons
The one where Kurt Russel’s wife disappears after their SUV breaks down, maybe it was called Breakdown?
