I was reading a news article talking about how Christopher Reeve is now able to breathe without a ventilator, and the article was accompanied by the following picture:
On a TV special about him a while back, he said that he was taking a medication that had hair loss as a side effect. At that time, he would wear a hairpiece for public appearances – but perhaps not anymore.
The New Yorker did a piece on him recently. The relevant excerpt:
“The most striking change in his appearance has nothing to do with his accident. Reeve has alopecia areata, a condition that causes patchy hair loss, and in February he had his head shaved.”
In the recent interview with Barbara Walters, he said it had to do with his SCI, which puzzled the hell outta me, as I work with patients with SCI and have never heard of this. Alopecia areata makes a lot more sense. It looked to me like his eyebrows were gone, too–they looked penciled in.
