A recent thread made me look up “eschar” and I stumbled upon the following picture. I don’t understand what would create these cuts in someone’s body. The place where I found it and Google image did not have much information. Would anyone be able to offer an educated guess about what could cause this?

That’s a burn victim under general anesthesia with a sterile surgical field around him. The cuts are surgical, straight scalpel lines, for an escharatomy.

Ah, so they do this because severely burned skin isn’t elastic enough to allow his torso to inflate so he’d eventually suffocate?
