After receiving Final Fantasy IV for the Gameboy Advance over Christmas I once again find myself pondering the mystery of Final Fantasy III. Specifically, what happened to it?
Yes, there was a Final Fantasy 3 released in the US but that was really Final Fantasy VI. It wasn’t until Final Fantasy VII was released on the Playstation that the Japanese and US titles matched up.
A couple of years ago Square released Final Fantasys I, II, IV, V and VI for the Playstation. (They were originally on the NES and SNES.) Final Fantasy III was conspicuous for its absence. (Final Fantasy IV was packaged with Chrono Trigger.) Now they are starting to release versions for the Gameboy Advance and have released I, II and IV. Again, Final Fantasy III was skipped.
So, what’s the deal? Was Final Fantasy III that bad? Does someone else own the rights to it? Why has the entire series been re-released except for that one?
There are translated ROMs you can play with an emulator on your computer. It introduced the class system from FF5 and FFT and was generally pretty good.
FFIII wasn’t bad, per se, but it’s definitely the weakest of the first six. It’s also one of the longest NES games I’ve ever played, and that may have something to do with it.
FFIII isn’t that bad. In fact, it introduces the class system, has more airships then any of the other games(each with a different function), and has a nice world that is quite fun to explore. The plot is merely decent and some of the areas are tough to get through, but it is worth playing.
Thanks all. Since it’s the only one of the series that I’ve never played (well, besides XI but that one doesn’t exactly count) I’ve been wanting to play it for completeness sake.
The DS remake is a legitimate, fully-polygonal remake of the game, and it looks pretty sweet. It’s a full-on remake, with the dialogue, story, interface, and engine updated.
I’m still waiting for the l33t model you know they have stashed away in a storehouse somewhere like the Arc of the Covanent. I owned the old school gray brick Gameboy from 1991-2001 before finally caving (ie accidently buying a game which only played on Gameboy Color) and getting a Gameboy Color. What happened then? Gameboy: SP. Then again the SP was selling at an asinine price until a few months before the DS came out. Hmmm. Maybe I should trade in my SP for a DS, then trade that in for the l33t model after its’ been out for a year or so.
I still have my gray brick. It makes an excellent paperweight.
That screenshot does look purdy, VC03, but I’m going to wait on the reviews to see if its’ worth rushing out for or even playing besides a the urge to catch 'em all. I mean, play 'em all.
Which one is 3? I’ve played the American 1 and 2 and 3 (6). I’ve also played the one where one of the main characters starts out as a pirate. Another flies on dragons. Meteors feature prominently. The bad guy’s name is “Exdeath” or something like that. Far from being bad, it was a really GOOD game: perhaps arguably the best imho. Was that game 3, or was the Japanese 4 or 5?
