This is kind of a dumb question, but what is so “final” about Final Fantasy? Is that a literal translation of the japanese translation?
Long story short: In serious financial trouble in the 80s, Square basically staked the company on one last game, Final Fantasy. It was a massive hit in both Japan and the US, saved the company, and Square has gone on to put out sequels ever since.

Legend has it that Square was going bankrupt and the original Final Fantasy was to be the last breathe of a dying compnay. No cite, but that’s the story as I know it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, until FFX-2 comes out, each Final Fantasy game has taken place in different worlds (they share some characteristics, but essentially they’re different worlds). So it can be implied that each game is the Final Fantasy that WE will be privvy to, in that world.
When is FFX-2 coming out? I need my FF fix…I’m dying here!

Take a month of finish X-2 and you can move right onto XI. It’ll be a good winter for FF fans.
Plus I heard a rumor of FFIII being put in a bundle for release like Origins, Anthology and Chronicles.

Yeah, I’ve stopped referring to them by their US numbers. The rumor said it was going to be bundled with Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2). I heard that somewhere over on the GameFAQS boards. I think the Anthology board. Just a rumor but we can hope. It’s the only one I don’t have.
The idea is also that each game is the **Final[b/] Fantasy for each world it takes place in, with no game having a direct sequel.
Then again, due to the financial failure of FFXI in Japan, they are releasing their first direct sequel…FFX-2.
There’s another story floating around that Final Fantasy is a mistranslation of Ultimate Fantasy, the game’s actual Japanese name. I’ve never seen a good cite for either story.
Actually, there was a sequel to FF6 in the works once upon a time–I saw a couple screenshots, so I know it got beyond the concept phase. I don’t know why it didn’t take off.
Either is not technially incorrect, but “Final Fantasy” is a better translation. Ultimate in this sense means “the last” rather than “the best”.
Actually, the Japanese name is just “Final Fantasy” in katakana. I’ve never even HEARD of Ultimate Fantasy before now. Just to lay that little rumour to rest.
