And I will agree with the above poster. Vanilla Coke is still sold. Oh, and I can get RC Cola easily as well.
The funny thing is that most colas including coke and Pepsi most likely have lemon and lime oil in their flavorings as citrus is a main flavor component just below the larger profile of vanilla and cinnamon.
I think this is the issue with the coke, they did not add juice and just upped the essential oil content, if you have ever made your own cola it is a similar taste if you get the quantities wrong.
This is just a guess but I would say the flavor was probably novel enough to pass taste panels it probably is cloying to most and thus had poor sales.
Hello from the Czech Republic with fantastic news, lemon Pepsi (known as “Pepsi Twist”) is sold here and it is also sold by various other European countries, also light (diet) lemon Pepsi (known as "Pepsi Light Lemon) is sold by our neighbor, Poland.
Back in the 50s, that was the only way to get flavored cola. Today’s cherry Coke is nothing, compared to cherry Coke of the 50s. It was a real treat.

I miss diet VAnilla Coke. Diet cherry coke is pretty good. Coke zero a poor third.
Dr Pepper Bold is really good. But I’ve never seen it outside of the South.
I haven’t seen any of those flavors here in the DFW area, but then I don’t buy most of those drinks to take home. On the other hand, the newer Coke-brand drink-in-a-cup machines (the ones with touch screens) have lots of flavor syrups inside, so you can mix your own half-lemon-Coke-with-a-squirt-of-cherry-Sprite-and-top-with-vanilla-Dr-Pepper.

We have Vanilla Coke Zero here in Michigan, available in 12-packs of cans.
The Addison Wal-Mart has the vanilla and cherry flavors; I haven’t seen the lime or lemon variants in years though.
Same thing here in Tucson. Safeway regularly has it on sale, buy 2, get 2 free. It evens out to about $3 a 12-pack.
