Well, last night I tried to hook up some headphones to my computer, to keep from disturbing anyone else in the house. Well, the headphones didn’t work, and after I plugged my speakers back in, I noticed that certain sounds kept repeating. The first split-second of sound would keep repeating over and over (something that was supposed to be click turned into clickclickclickclick…). The sound stops as soon as the offending program is closed.
After a bit of testing, I found that only Wav type sounds (come up on Windows Volume Control as Wave/DirectSound) are affected (CD and MIDI audio aren’t).
Web browsers, Trillian, and Winamp are the programs that have been impaired by this, that I have so far noticed.
Windows Media Player still works fine with all file types.
RealOne works with avi and wmv files.
Virus scan turned up negative. Definitions are updated as of two days ago. Ran all the Norton Systems checks, still nothing. All spyware was taken off the computer. And, to add insult to injury, the computer freezes when I try to reinstall sound card drivers. Running Windows ME.
To the best of my knowledge, everything was running fine before I tried to plug in the headphones, and stopped working directly afterwards. And, as one additional problem, the computer is no longer shutting down correctly. After Windows has exited, it just stays at a completely black screen without the computer powering off. This also first started happening when I tried to shut down the computer last night.
Any ideas?
