The title about sums it up. Lately (since my most recent move, oddly enough), I’ve noticed that some programs that used to make noises, like Outlook Express (used to beep when I got mail), AIM (used to make sounds when I got messages or when someone logged on or off), and now Snood (used to, uh, just make noises) now don’t. I went into the Control Panel/Sounds, and tried to “preview” some of the windows sounds, and none of them would work. Finally, I found some .wavs in my mp3 folder, and none of them would play, either. Winamp would open as normal in the latter case, and appear to be playing the file, but no sound. I’ve poked around the control panel, and it says everything is working properly. Nothing obvious is wrong. I know it’s not something dumb, like a volume setting or loose wire, because other audio formats, like mp3s, games, or movies, all work fine.
I’m using XP Home, with sound integrated to my motherboard, which I know sucks, but hey. Any ideas?
Ah, for an editing function. I don’t like that thread title now. Read “What can I suddenly no longer play wav files?” It’s not like I’m only able to play them in a long, drawn out, non-sudden manner…
Double click the little speaker icon in your system tray, and unmute the Wave player. If you don’t see Wave listed, click Options > Properties then scroll through list until you see it and check it. If you don’t have the speaker icon, go to the Control Panel, double-click Sound and Audio Devices and check Show Volume Control in Taskbar.
this has happened to me on several occasions especially after i have downloaded another sound program.
on the internet go to tools/internet options/advance tab and at the bottom is a button that says “restore defaults.” click that and see if it cures the problem.
Daizey: Yes, no restores yet (this is a fairly new computer), haven’t tried the CD - that’s something I’d let the tech support people try (free support for life with this computer), and yes - no splats anywhere.
QED - I’ve been all through that control panel. Everything’s unmuted.
And, biker - I haven’t used Internet Explorer at all on this machine, but I’ll give it a shot anyway.
Smeghead?
What do you mean, no restores yet? Surely it’s making a restore point every day? Unless you’ve disabled that feature?
As for using the CD for a repair…it’s not nearly as hard as you think. Do post back if you wish to attempt it, and I’ll post a step by step for you.
