Recently, I tried adding a New Mail sound for my gmail. It worked ok the first couple of times, then went mute.
So, I went to Control Panel and opened Sounds & Audio Devices, then tried to play samples of the various sounds. I would then get the following error message (my bolding):
Windows cannot play the %\System Root%\Media\Windows\Hardware Insert.wave File. The file may be damaged or may use an unrecognized compression format. To resolve the problem replace the file or use Add\Remove Programs in Control Panel to install Audio Compression.
I have done nothing except try other Sound Schemes to see if something would work, but it didn’t. So, I can use your advice.
If you’re going to say…“Well replace the file, Idiot! Isn’t that what the program told you to do?!!!”…the answer is yes, but it didn’t say how. And that’s why I’m here and you’re reading my sad, sad story.
I hope it’s enough to make your eyes well over. Maybe then you’ll be more empathetic.
Go back to Google and download the file again. You can delete the old file first (the warning tells you the path – just use your Windows directory (usually c:\windows) where it says “%System Root%.”
If that doesn’t work, find a suitable file with a .wav exention. Rename it “insert.wav” and copy it to the folder indicated in the path in the error message.
Don’t get pissed, but I don’t understand what you’re saying. I didn’t use Google at all. Just Control Panel. Could you tell me — at idiot level — exactly what I should do.
Now, the damned thing works. And all I did was go into Control Panel to sample the sound again, and I got the Hoot Hoot of an owl, as it did originally.
Then I sent myself an email, and when it arrived, the owl sang its song.
Can’t figure it out. If everything goes as before, it’ll soon stop singing.
The sound is not that of a BarnOwl, but it’s just as well. That bird’s song is a shrill and scary screech. I think the Windows song is a Great Horned Owl.
