What happened to the look of hamsters?

My brother had hamsters back in the mid-late 70s. My daughter has a hamster now. It doesn’t look at all like the ones I remember in the past. It is pretty damn fuzzy and a hellova lot cuter than the ones from the 70s.

I know there are a few varieties out there and I’ve looked at a lot of images on the internet, but none of them look like the ones my brother had.

Does anyone else notice this? or am I crazy?

If its true, what happened to hamsters in the last 30 yrs?

Are you sure you’re not thinking of gerbils? To me, it’s always been:

Gerbils = Mouse-like

Hamsters = Cute and fuzzy wuzzy

But they both love those cages where they can run on the wheel.

I had both hamsters and gerbils, at different times, when I was younger.

However, I’ve noticed that the modern trend in hamsters is to sell a different variety than was popular twenty or thirty years ago. Those had smooth, soft, velour-like fur. The “in” hamster of 2005 has longer, rather frizzy, almost “spiked” fur, rather like a guinea pig’s coat.

The more modern hamsters sing and dance like these:
