Just morbid curisosity, I guess, but did we ever identify the remains of the 9/11 hijackers? I know that it took months and months to literally piece together everyone they could, so the families could dispose of them, but what did we do with the hijackers?
It seems they are waiting for someone to claim them.
I saw an interesting documentary on people who die in LA where no friends/relatives can be found or none want to claim the body. They cremate the body and keep the ashes for a while and eventually they are buried in a grave with other people who met the same fate. Can’t recall how long they wait for the ashes to be claimed, maybe a year.
I guess it’s different in this case because it’s a crime and not a natural death.
I don’t think someone dying in the commission of a crime changes the rules for what is to be done with the body (punishment for crimes does not include poor treatment of your remains, especially since they can’t be convicted of the crime after their dead), unless they need to keep the body as evidence in an ongoing investigation, as is mentioned in the article linked in the post before yours.
