What happens if Trump is indicted in Georgia? (Indicted on August 14, 2023)

i believe there are a number of factors. there is an appeal on fani willis, amoung others, today there is a hearing on first amendment rights brought by trump. also the supreme court may throw a wrench into things with the immunity case.

The SCOTUS decision on immunity has no relevance to the Georgia case, does it?

he was in the oval office while doing most of the georgia stuff.

It’s a violation of NY state law. If it were relevant, the trial would have been put on hold for the same reason the Federal election interference case was (Judge Chutkan). Most appeals occur after a guilty conviction. The exceptions include those cases where immunity or jurisdiction are in question—i.e., this trial, in this court, may have no basis for proceeding.

You mean Georgia state law?

D’oh! Of course. You need a scorecard with this guy.

I’d guess what he pulled in GA wouldn’t be okay in NY, for what it’s worth.

So a reminder today that the case is continuing despite Trump’s appeal on Willis’ status:

I’m not super confident of it starting before election (it was more complex than that other cases he was facing, so was going to take a while)

Sadly, it’s not going to happen until next year.

3 republicans on the Georgia Court of Appeals court have decided to slow walk the appeal of the ridiculous sideshow regarding the DA’s personal life. They’ve set oral arguments for October 4th.

I mean, if Trump loses the election, he’s going to prison. But any republican who has influence, it seems, is going to do what they can to give him a shot at the presidency first.

Which makes our, the individual voters, actions more important than ever. #1: Vote. Do not get complacent just because you live in a blue state. Instead of 81.2 million to 72.2, totaling 153.4, the popular vote needs to be 100 million to 60, the extra being those who couldn’t be arsed to vote even in 2020.

This is also important because the only way we shed ourselves of the Electoral College is for there to be an election where a candidate gets shellacked in the popular vote (by, like 10+%) yet still wins the EC.

Nope. Why would the the smaller states agree?

We should ask the five states with five or fewer electoral votes apiece (plus the District) why they’ve gone insane and enacted the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact into state law.

Some pressure would have to come to bear from the outraged citizenry of the larger states. Boycotts, denial of access to congressional pork, and the shame of being flagrantly undemocratic. I would likely take decades.

Moderating:

This is a perfectly good discussion to have, just not in this thread. Drop it here and start a new thread if you wish. If you start a new thread to discuss further, I will move these posts to the new thread. Thanks.

Well, this sucks:

# Georgia court of appeals indefinitely pauses the election subversion conspiracy case against Donald Trump

A Georgia appeals court has halted the election subversion conspiracy case against former President Donald Trump and several of his co-defendants until a panel of judges rules on whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified.

The new order filed on Wednesday from the Georgia Court of Appeals is the latest indication that a trial in the state-level Georgia election subversion case will not occur before the 2024 presidential election.

The appeals court is expected to rule on the disqualification issue by March 2025, though it could issue a ruling sooner. Several sources close to the case have told CNN that the timeline remains very uncertain.

But not really a surprise.

Ninja’ed!

They’ve also halted all progress on the case while the appeal is pending.

The Georgia Court of Appeals’ order on Wednesday prevents Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee from moving forward with pretrial motions as he had planned while the appeal is pending.

And October is the hearing, but they aren’t expected to deliver a verdict until next March.

…is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 4. The court will then have until mid-March to rule, and the losing side will be able to appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court.

**Apologies if this information was in the above linked article, I’ve used all of my free views of AJC for the month and couldn’t read it.

It’s too bad that none of those toadies can do anything about the concrete fact that Trump is going to lose the 2024 election, and after that he will face all of his prosecutions. I almost can’t wait.
Can it be after the election already?

I know the trial still wouldn’t have started before November 2024 … but in hindsight: Should Fani Willis have summarily recused herself once the Trump team filed the Nathan Wade motion?

I guess, realistically, the Trump team would’ve just found some other delaying and little would be changed.
