What happens if Trump is indicted in Georgia? (Indicted on August 14, 2023)

Is there another body that can issue pardons in Georgia?

Yes, a state pardon board. See the discussion above, from posts 35 to 50.

FIFY:

I’m happy Trump wasted more of his followers’ money on a motion that was mostly characterized as a Hail Mary effort.

Given that Fani Willis asked a few moths ago that no in-person hearing be held the first 3 weeks of August and that her staff would be working remotely during the first 3 weeks of August and that they’ve now put up barricades around the courthouse, i think it’s reasonable to say that we can expect the Georgia indictment next week. The courthouse will be empty(ish) and barricaded to hopefully prevent shenanigans, the prosecutors will be working safely from home.

How is this a thing again? Didn’t the Supreme Court of Georgia already tell him to take a hike?

The Supreme Court of Georgia previously denied a similar motion by Trump and his team.

I hope the DA brings charges before the hearing. Then i wonder, could she, with this matter still (somehow) pending?

The hearing is set for Thursday, August 10 at 10 a.m., and all briefs on the issue are due two days prior, on August 8.

I am not sure if Trump’s strategy of “piss off the courts with frivolous motions right before they charge me” is going to be very successful.

Then again, maybe he realizes how ironclad a case this is, and is desperate, and figures there’s nothing to lose at this point.

Trump called down to Georgia
He was lookin’ for some votes to steal

He was low on grift and lookin’ to make a deal.

“Find me those votes” he squealed, “don’t care if you make them up”

“I’ve got some Nazi folk ready to hang Pence up”

Sounds like someone just got a perfect phone call from the DA.

Is it just me, or do these “truth” tweets look like someone’s having fun with Mad Libs?

Looks like someone is in uber panic mode. :scream:

Here’s what I hope happens. donald shows up to the hearing, the judge summarily denies his motion, whereupon he’s promptly arrested and charged by the DA with the election interference charges.

Just put the cuffs on him right there in court. Just like the common crook he is.

Good question. They should have. The evidence in the Georgia phone call case is clear enough. The only question is whether it amounts to a crime. And that should have been by legal experts quickly enough.

Why has it taken so long to bring charges?

It’s definitely taken longer than it should have. Partially because they called some 70-80 witnesses, some if whom had to be fought in court and compelled by a judge to show up. Then there’s that whole special grand jury thing that Georgia does, which can’t deliver an indictment, so they had to have another regular grand jury to hear the testimony. It still could have been brought 6-7 months ago I think the special grand jury finished up in November or December, I can’t recall exactly. Put it before a regular grand jury the next week and GO, people!

This investigation began in 2021. The court authorized DA Willis to impanel the SGJ on May 2, 2022, for a period up to one year. In January 2023, the court announced that the SGJ had completed its work and was being dissolved and a hearing was held on whether to publicly release the report.

I guess I remembered incorrectly, they ended in January this year. Still, that’s going on 7 months ago…

DA Fani Willis’s case is not just against Trump.

It’s against many more people who allegedly conspired with Trump to overturn Biden’s lawful election. As such, Willis is prosecuting it as a racketeering case. This means she is going after those culpable across not just the State of Georgia, but across state lines.

It may seem like the special grand jury created delay, but it was in fact the most direct and swift mechanism available to Willis to bring her case. Had she proceeded with a regular grand jury, then every witness who raised issues re privilege or anything else would have been litigated to regular district and circuit courts. By using the special grand jury, Willis could get immediate rulings on those issues by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, who oversaw the special grand jury.

It takes time to pull together a case like that. It’s quite complicated and involved, and personally, I’m impressed she’s done it in such a short amount of time.

On the other hand, how many criminals complain about getting an extra 2.5 years of freedom before facing (what appears to be likely) prosecution?

I just noticed his Truth Social photo. That’s pretty jarring.

Also, I can’t quite figure out how he thinks these prosecutions are “racist.” I don’t think the D.A. is going after him because he’s white.

Willis is Black. To a racist like Trump, that’s the whole story.

Right. Has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a criminal, and IMHO a traitor.

I shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s such a stupid accusation.

Just under seven minutes. I think it’s a good précis of this specific aspect:

MSNBC YouTube video - Georgia’s RICO law could target the entire Trump campaign

It’s a powerfully pleasant thought.
