Out of idle curiosity (and because I’m too lazy to dig for information), is the count of SDMB registered users available? How about the number of posters who have posted in the last, say, 6 months? And what’s the average number of posts submitted per day?
I’m not at all a huge Trump fan, but good luck in getting me. I can’t afford to even holiday in the USA, and while I rarely criticize your incumbent, I am willing to say, Trump is not at all welcome in the Republic of South Africa, where I reside.
He’d have a tough time in a country that ended systematic discrimination and - to some extent - income inequality between races.
Well, some whites might welcome him. But we are, by a vast majority, Black. Our politics are well left of the USA. We did have our home-grown Nazis, the AWB, they have faded from the scene after the leader was murdered.
DHS is scouring Reddit for anti-ICE posts. But they probably won’t notice us. Unless somebody narcs.
But it’s the granularity of the monitoring that is most absurd. To determine the “threat” posed by Budget-Chicken-2425, analysts didn’t just look at the protest call; they scoured the user’s entire digital footprint.
The bulletin notes that Chicken “frequently participates in various community discussions,” listing their interests in r/Texans (comparing the team to the Cleveland Browns), r/movies (discussing the film Almost Famous), r/stephenking (sharing book collections), and r/FuckImOld (reminiscing about 1970s television production logos).
Never underestimate the pettiness of insecure people. The pathological need for control and revenge in this White House is unfathomable. I’m not saying we’re at the top of anyone’s list, but just by virtue of the fact that we are not fawning sycophants, we are ON the list.
The only question is how long it will be before they get to us. I doubt the electrical infrastructure will outlast us.
At this point, I’d say our position on “the list” is somewhere between the Kiwanis Club and those people who set up bins outside grocery stores for donating old pairs of glasses.
I could well imagine that the SDMB is already in the DHS’s sights. Over the long years of its existence, there have always been people on the SDMB who have been banned, either as trolls, socks etc., or because they were recognizable as right-wing supporters and hated the SDMB. There were (and are) many Dopers who really can’t stand each other and wish each other ill. Some of these people are certainly willing to draw the attention of the authorities to the Dopers, claiming that they are a gang of ultra-leftists who despise and insult Trump and much more, and who need to be kept an eye on. Denunciation is widespread among fascists. At some point, the owners of the SDMB will be approached. With a bit of luck, nothing more will happen than the SDMB being shut down.
As has been repeatedly observed in the thread, this doesn’t even need to start with such specific direct contact. The admin just needs to make a broad, general announcement about “problematic” speech online being investigated, and some number of site owners — probably not a majority, but some meaningful proportion, possibly including this one — will pre-emptively modify their scope of services, or simply close down, rather than risk being targeted with further attention.
Those who roll their eyes at the mutterings here seem to portray this thread as a paranoid fantasy where Trump posts on Truth Social and explicitly names the board, or equally ludicrous and unlikely scenarios where this tiny community is directly in the crosshairs of powerful people. That, of course, is laughable in its implausibility, and nobody thinks otherwise.
But the alternative, above, is far from implausible.
I agree. Which leads us back to the basic question: What is the SDMB’s policy? How will they respond? I think we all have a right to an answer. Or to expect that one be developed soonest.
I am more concerned with the scenario in which the DHS simply demands all boards submit their membership lists with full email database. Much like they have demanded states produce their voter databases. Will the SDMB simply wipe the discs? Is everything already on a cloud server? What is our level of vulnerability?
We don’t have a right to jack shit. I’d be stunned if they have spent even a minute thinking about what they would do. Presumably they’d play it by ear. If anyone is so concerned by such an absurdity, they should get off the internet entirely. They will have gotten me on stuff that I have posted in my own name on Facebook before they get to here.
FUCK TRUMP. FUCK ICE. FUCK THE GOP. COME AND GET ME, ASSHOLES.
There must be a EULA, terms of use or whatever they called it that we all have agreed to more or less implicitly when we signed up and started posting here under US law, thereby giving up our GDPR privileges. Nobody ever read that shit, right? Would not make a difference, as one of the terms was that they may change the terms with no prior notice, also retroactively (that is a standard clause, they always included it wrapped in more or less obscure legalese). Some day we will pay for that. Enshitification applies to governments too, not only corporations.
