The first couple of times I switched cell phones my old one was lost or broken.
This time I kept it and am not yet done transferring things from the appointment book, etc. So I turn it on from time to time. I noticed the envelope icon and by habit used the phone to check my voice mail, and it worked.
(If these things are important: so far the two phones have been in the same house, and I’m using Sprint.)
So, these question arise -
Can I call using either phone on the same line? Seems like it.
If the phones are separated, in a different service cell, which one would get the incoming call? Both?
If I did use both phones from different places would I be charged for that, or am I just charged for the normal minutes?
I don’t want to pay extra, but it’s an intriguing idea to use two phones with one number.
I imagine Sprint has some kind of grace period before they completely cut off the second phone. A lot of people cant be bothered to transfer things over for a few days. This is why the techs warn you to shut it off when you get your new one.
Generally, the phone has its own ID and then there’s a subscriber ID. Sprint can disable a phone by either. So if you cancel your account they can shut down all your phones or they can shut down the phone by a phone by phone basis.
As far as which gets the calls, Im not sure, but Ive been able to do this in the past. Im guessing the latest one to register on the cell network will get the calls.
“Warning” means there’s a downside. So what’s the downside if you ignore the warning? Having two phones on one number sounds reasonable. Give the spare phone to Gran (she only has a land line) to leave in her car for calling the Auto Club. She gets an emergency phone without a monthly fee. Hmmm… “without a fee” can’t be right, the phone company is too sharp to let that happen.
One the downside is that the phone will not recieve service outside 911 calls.
Regarding the second, give gran the old one and she is able to use it for 911 emergency calls but nothing else unless that ESN number is assigned to a new phone number.
I have 2 cell phones with the same number. The new phone came with a new sim card. The new phone also has a pathetic battery life and on a few occasions I have found the battery dead. I just grab the old phone and it has worked fine. I haven’t tried calling my cell phone number with both phones on. I should give it a try to see what happens.
My little experiment shows that both phones rang. I answered one and the other quit ringing. When I answered the second phone it was just dead air, I could not hear anything through the other cell phone or my land line phone.
Reversing the order in which I answer the cell phones does nothing, the first answered works, dead air on the second.
3 tries of answering both at the same time resulted in the same as above, one phone connects, the other has dead air.
I almost saw a use for the old phone, you could call the new phone to find where you left it. But then I remembered you’d just reach your voice message server.
I wish I’d kept my old phone. I gave it to the e-waste collection. If I knew it still worked I could use it as a backup when the main one lost its charge.
