As well as friend Diogenes, I am troubled by the Bush Admins reluctance to offer complete cooperation to this committee. If this were only a matter of overboarding some lower level functionaries who fucked up, it would already have been done. So clearly, something more is at stake.
That said, I would bet everything I had and all I could steal that GeeDubya did not know in advance of 9/11. This would make him an utterly vile and despicable scoundrel, whereas I can only reach incompetent and mendacious doofus.
If the Bushiviks had actionable intelligence of such, they would have acted. And they would still be wallowing in the glory to this very day.
I really don’t buy into any theory that Bush specifically knew of the attack, I’m not that mindlessly partisan.
I just think he was lazy and indifferent about terrorism when he first came in and the WH doesn’t want that exposed. I think Condie doesn’t want to embarrass W politically during an election campaign by having to answer questions about why he didn’t give a fuck about the warnings given to him by the outgoing Clinton administration.

I think that she knows something, and I think that she has no desire to be picked apart by a bunch of Monday Morning Quarterbacks. Does that mean that she knows something? Maybe. It could also mean that she doesn’t want to be publicly destroyed in the questioning process.
I personally think that as an appointee of an elected official, she has to take her lumps same as if she were elected. So yeah, I think she should get on the stand. But you know what? It seems to me that these people already know the answers, they’re just looking to embarass some people, and truth be told, Condoleeza Rice is not the person who should fall victim to the hatchet these guys are looking to swing.
There’s also the thing about sources. This seems to be an issue of intelligence. What should be said, and what should not be said? I have dealt with this before as well, when TV people come to the base. I’m told what I can say and what I can’t say, and I find it much easier and safer to stay the hell away from anyone waving a camera in my direction. Maybe that’s all that she’s doing.
So, anyway, not to muddle this up too much, I think she should take the stand, I can see why she wouldn’t want to, and I think they’re asking the wrong people if they want real answers, especially since I suspect that they (being the committee) already know the answers. It seems kinda McCarthy-like, if you ask me.
I never said that it would be a “hostile environment of Democrat political hacks”. You’re really good at putting words in people’s mouths, elucidator, but not this time. I never said anything like that.
I think that if there was any advance knowledge or ignored intelligence, someone will have to be skewered for it. And the Republicans will be just as hard at it as the democrats will. Mark my words, I think this committee will claim someone high up before it’s done, either because of some unforeseen bombshell or because someone will refuse to answer. And that’s what I meant by McCarthyism. Someone’s head will roll, and everyone will want to get in on the chopping, whether there’s anything to it or not.

McCarthyism is a sweeping attack against those who hold an undesirable ideology. It does not have anything to do withe the righteous rousting out of the guilty.
