What other hi-speed internet services besides SBC DSL and Comcast Cable Internet are available on the Monterey Area? I ask because I can’t wait until next week for Comcast to make it to my place, and SBC DSL is not available in my area.
Any other Dopers on the Monterey Peninsula have other alternatives?
Try asking there. Why can’t you wait a week? Patience, grasshopper. Your likely only other option is some other DSL provider besides SBC. I waited over a year here for DSL, as since I have no interest in cable TV Comcast was way too expensive. I currently have SBC DSL. After being refused DSL through Best Buy with SBC, I called SBC direct and asked. I got a hard sell beyond my belief. Sensing opportunity, I haggled with SBC and they paid me to sign up for DSL. I actually heard the SBC tech outside my rented townhouse setting up my line for DSL, and walked out and struck up a conversation.
There must be a Ferengi Rule of Acquistion about this, but never hesitate to haggle a deal. SBC DSL here is great. I hope never again to have to bother with dial up.
I have no broadband available at the Plant Home in the Woods. No cable, no DSL, the only satellite I can find isn’t in the area yet. Why the hell do they have to be in the area? A sixth dish would be cool, but it sucks for online games.
Cable modems have long been available here, but as I have no interest in cable TV they cost an arm and a leg. SBC around here has been pushing DSL with a VERY hard sell. Includind lots of ads on the local urban contemporary radio station. When I called asking if DSL was now available and the answer was yes, the sales dude wouldn’t accept the notion of me signing up at Best Buy. He wanted to get me as a customer NOW. Sensing opportunity, I haggled. My box already was DSL capable, and setting it up was trivial. At the moment DSL is just $20 a month. At that price, screw dial up.
Have a look at sonic.net - they’re fast on the way to offering DSL to all of California, and their service is far better than SBC’s. The actual wiring is sub-contracted to SBC, but don’t worry about that.
