I just moved into a great new apartment with lots of room for plants, but I need inspiration. My window doesn’t get enough light for african violets, and I just can’t bring myself to buy another spider plant. What plants do you have, and what light conditions do they seem to like?
Plain ol’ ivy does well just about anywhere and my corn plant seems to do well in low light.
Philodendron (sp?) usually does ok with low light and can even go a while with little watering. Another low light/little watering plant is what some call the snake plant (other’s call it mother-in-laws tongue); in fact, if you water them too much it will rot the roots (I know, I’ve done that, killed em with too much water! :().
You can do African violets if you have somewhere you can put them where they’d be close to a plant light or even a little florescent light–they do just as well with artificial light.
Hope this helps ya, and good luck with your plants.

Ferns seem to always do well even if neglected. I’ve had them in and outdoors.
Ferns like low or indirect light, I have lots of different kinds: rabbit’s foot, bird’s nest, medusa, maidenhair.
Dracaena Marginata (I think is what I have). Little one are sort of like spider plants only spikier and no babies.
They grow into these cool Dr. Seuss-looking tufty trees. Also hard to kill by forgetting to water.
Mine seems to do okay with just morning sun, it did grow faster when I had it out on the patio last summer.
It’s been indoor all this year, doing ok so far.
I’ve got grass. A little box of grass. But it’s for my cat. To Eat. She’s only nibbled.
We’ve also got an aloe plant that I’ve been trying to kill for … 5 years. No luck yet.
My favourite houseplant (of those that I currently keep) is Ledebouria Socialis.
The books all say it needs full sun but I’ve not managed to kill one regardless where I put it.
I believe that some Begonias are quite good in shade - the ones with red undersides to the leaves are generally natives of rainforest floors (which can get rather shady).
Well Mrs.Phlosphr and I live in New England, so we do not have the best sunlight but we have enough to have a veritable jungle in our home. And because plants increase oxygen levels in the home and promote a general good feeling, we have tons and tons of plants hangine, lurking, and lingering all over the place. We do have a sun room but hey you don’t need one to have a great collection.
One of the first things I’d think about if I were you is, getting plants that can provide ‘babies’ if you will. Plants you can cut, put in water, and then have another of the same species in a wee or two. Spider plants are best for this, and of any variety, they all look good in my opinion.
If you want to hang some plants check out here and you 'll see just about every variety you can imagine. Just take the name of the plant and google search it from the list and you’ll see what it lookes like.
Cactus can be fun, and are very very low maintenance. Another fun thing to do, go out and get some sugar snap peas and hange them from a window, they will grow down and then when the peas come you can just pluck one off and have a snack, or instant salad.
Who says you can’t grow vegies in the house?
The only houseplant that manages to stand up to the abuse that I give houseplants is the old tried and true Pothos.
Other than that, the class of houseplants in my home would probably be best described by something akin to herba moribundus
