What, if anything, does 'portales' mean in Spanish?

I frequented a restaurant frequently called “Los Bellos Portales.” I got “los” and “bellos,” but drew a blank on “portales,” although I do know that it’s one of the more sizeable towns in New Mexico. One website I encountered said it didn’t MEAN anything, although “bellos” would apparently be the “beauty” of it.

I’m not sure if any city in New Mexico outside of Albuquerque can be considered sizable. Especially Portales, which means “portals” supposedly.

In the context, portales just mean “big gates”

Think of a mansion or other big house where they have the front gates? Those big wooden doors? Yea, that’s what the word means in that context.

As to what it would mean as a restaurant name, here is a possibility:

“Los bellos portales” = “The big beautiful entrance” And the big beautiful entrance is welcoming you to the restaurant.

Thanks!

I like the Big Beautiful Portal better. Much more futuristic and space-agey.

Heh… Well, yea, that is the other meaning, as in “internet portal”.

But I don’t think that’s what they were going for in a family-owned Mexican restaurant.

Well screw them! I’ma start my own family-owned Mexican restaurant! With blackjack, and hookers! And space-agey portals taking you room to room while bending and breaking what we know about physics!

That’ll show 'em.
