'What If' Comic Books

Well…my idea’s probably already been done…but, I doubt it was done the way I’d like to see:

What if…Professor X never founded the X-Men.

Done as a series of short stories about what life (or death) would have been like for the mutants who would otherwise have become the X-Men would have been like.

My favorite What If:

What If Professor Xavier had become the Juggernaut.

Prof X is with his brother in Korea when they stumble into the cave with the Cytorrak (sp) gem. Xavier touches it first and gains the powers of the Juggernaut. Combined with his telepathy he essentially takes over the US and establishes Mutants as the dominat social class.

In the present day, teams of mutant police patrol New York cracking down on human crime and lightly prosecuting Mutant on Human violence.

The story centers on Cyclops (the leader of one of the mutant cop teams) who is starting to become disillusioned with the world he lives in. He’s married to JEan Grey and they have two children, Nathan and Rachel. After some soul searching he decides to quit the force and take up arms against Xavier. He addresses all the Mutant cops and asks if anyone will join him. Jean does, as do Colossus (if memory serves), Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (my two favorite characters). Quicksilver (in a very true to character moment) explains he’s joining Cyclops, not to fight for Human rights but because he is against the abuse of humans (basicly the same way someone might be against abusing animals).

They gain an unlikely ally in the form of Cain Marko (Prof. X brother and the real MU Juggernaut) and Magneto. Magneto has the means to stop Xavier.

I can’t remember the specifics of the plan but I do remember that the good guys are put in the situation of having to kill their former friends in order to trap Juggernaut. Colossus sacrifices himself at some point.

Juggernaut at the end is blasted into space (since he can’t be stopped any other way) where he in theory will tumble until he hit something. Cyclops and co realize they have let loose a potential greater threat in Magneto but together they will fight him and bring peace to Man and Mutant kind.

I think the What if Spiderman joined the FF did happen Wolverine. Spiderman ended up dying on a mission fighting Galactus.

I think if I had to go for any what if I would like to see, since I’m not an avid comic reader would be…

What if Peter Parker’s Uncle had Never Died?

His uncle doesn’t die, he doesn’t feel an overwhelming urge to stop criminals everywhere. Who knows?

Here’s as complete a list of the Marvel comics as I could find, with the scenario for each issue: What If?

I only had a few issues, but they were great, because they frequently used the format as an excuse to kill as many characters as they could. For example, #45 of the original run, “What if the Hulk went berzerk?” As I recall, the Hulk killed the Human Torch and the Thing, nearly killing Reed Richards, before finally being killed himself by Thor. Ah, the carnage!

I’m amused by the ‘What if Spiderman’s Clone had survived?’ one…

“What if Captain America Was Revived Today”, What If? #67. A great story, pitting Cap against a United States government that’s been taken over by right-wing fascists who’ve enacted restrictive laws under the guise of “patriotism” and “national security.” Rather apt for this day and age, really.

As a Transformers geek, though, I’ll always have a place in my heart for “What if Death’s Head Had Lived”.

They did this one. Instead of Ben confronting the burglar and being shot, Aunt May confronts the burglar, and gets shot. Peter still becomes a vigilante with the “great power = great responsibility” angst, but this time he has male-bonding conflicts with his uncle, who quickly uncovers his nephew’s double life. In a megadramatic moment, Ben confronts J. Jonah to complain about the Bugle’s spider-bashing and Spider-Man charges in to try to talk Ben out of it. Net result: Spidey’s secret ID is revealed to Jonah in such a way that Jonah can’t publish without endangering Ben’s life.

It was an interesting issue, but not a universe-shaking one.

Yeah, it was called The Age of Apocolypse and took place in 7 comic titles over a 3 or 4 months.

They actually did this one! Also “What if Wonderman was a Woman and PowerMan a Girl.” in the same issue.

You know they actually did kill the big G about three years ago. After something like 35 years of saying he couldn’t die without the Marvelverse dying they killed him and used the lame ass excuse of turning him into a star…his “true form.” There was supposed to be a big follow-up saga that would shake the entire marvel universe blah blah blah but I guess, unfortunately, there was a lack of public intrest. I heard the big follow-up story was supposed to be Maximum Security but I bought that whole series and most of the crossovers and it ended up having utterly nothing to do with Galactus.

I’ve always enjoyed What if’s…. The first comic I ever owned was a What if…, it was the one where Kraken the Hunter kills Spider-man. I think in the end HE ends up becoming spider-man, or something like that. Some of my favorite’s are:
What if Captain America had led an army of super soldies in WWII? and the sequel…
What if Captain America formed the Avengers?
What if Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires?- I liked it because it had The Punisher obtaining the soul of Dr. Strange. And Frank Castle wearing a skull shirt with a flowing cape is cool looking.
and…
What if the Fantrasic Four’s second child had lived? It was two stories in one. In the first one, the daughter is evil and only Reed’s boy knows this…in the second, the daughter has healing powers and tries to unite the world, kinda cool, especially the ending.

Screw 'em. I like my idea better. Although if it’s been done, I’d hate to screw with the continuity.

You guts can feel free to mess with DC too.

ha, jeeze. I give up! :stuck_out_tongue:

guts = guys

Whatever

What if… Marvel writters didn’t constantly bend to preassure from fans and never came up with that whole “bone-claws” idea with Wolverine? I REALLY detested that when I saw it. The first couple issues after he got his adamantium ripped out, he went around fighting with a sword, not using his claws except to show people “Hey, I don’t have the metal anymore, leave me alone.” They could have really done some cool shit with character developement and stuff, but no, they had to listen to all those little whiney shits out there who bitch “wolverine’s just not Wolverine without his claws.” Fucking buttmunches.

What If…Apocolypse from Age of Apocolypse managed to cross over into the “real” Marvel universe? I loved that stroyline, and I’m interested to see how Apocolypse would deal with himself. Would they team up, or fight due to the whole “Only one of us can rule this world” concept?

Apocalypse and AOA Apocalypse would definitely fight. Survival of the fittest, the two biggest dogs would want to see who deserves to rule.

As for the bone claws… I actually liked the bone claws. They made more sense to me then some mad scientists coating his skeleton with adamantium and saying… “Hey, you know what would be cool? IF we gave Weapon X CLAWS!” Apparently these mad scientists have the “cool” quotient of 8 year old boys then.

The What If Kraven had killed Spiderman was a really intense issue for me as a kid. Yeah Kraven instead of just poisoning Spiderman and burying him alive… He shoots him in the head. He then decides to become Spiderman. Wearing the black costume and actually eating spiders to gain their strength he runs around town brutally beating up thugs. In the end Daredevil and the Human Torch have to stop him. Mary Jane also becomes a superhero advocate and goes head to head with JJ Jameson over his coverage of superheroes.

What If Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires is another really good one. I always wanted a action figure of the Punisher wearing Dr. Strange’s cape.

Did anyone read the later What Ifs? This was after they decided to dropthe specific event from the title and just make it What If… Jubilee What If …Ghost Rider. It was more centered on a character.

My favorite from that time was What If Quicksilver.
The story was essentially What if Magneto’s first daughter had lived.
For those of you who don’t know, Magneto had a first daughter (who was human not a mutant) with his wife. She was killed when an angry mob of villagers burned down their home after seeing Mag’s power. Magneto then slaughtered the villages using his powers. This act caused Magda, Magnetos wife to flee from him while she was pregnant. Pietro (Quicksilver) and Wanda (Scarlet Witch) were born on Mt. Wundagore and Magneto had no idea he had more children. And indirectly led to Magneto becoming… .well Magneto.

So if the daughter had lived then Magda wouldn’t have fled, Magneto never becomes a supervillain and raises Pietro and Wanda. Magneto is sort of the head of a Mutant Mafia. The main story focuses on Quicksilver breaking out on his own and having a normal life. I won’t spoil it but it ends really darkly. Like most good What Ifs do.

I especially enjoyed the one where the X-Men stayed in Asgard because Wolfsbane changed her vote when Loki asked them what they wanted to do. It was touching to see Rogue living such a different life.
