Yeah, not following the whole premise here was kinda weird…that and the inappropriate humor was my biggest criticism.
Come on guys (Marvel), I know you think you have to follow a formula here, but its a grim subject. Get serious for a moment.
I liked it a lot…but at the same time it was kind of crappy writing. I think the comics have done a “What if Thor died early in his career” before, and it was a grief-stricken Odin, that came down. Blamed himself and Earth. THATS great pathos.
Have the Allfather replace Loki…and when all is said and done
Odin: “I have paid and then some…you have yet to deliver penance to Asgard.”
THEN have the twist be Loki/Hiddleston show up at the UN.
I’m taking that as a positive. It means Marvel is taking chances with new writers and directors. “What If…?” is a great, lower-pressure environment for developing your writing/directing chops. When it isn’t a tent-pole blockbuster, you can stretch some.
I can’t take credit for noticing this (read it on other forums), but in the second Captain America flick, Natasha tells Steve about being shot by the Winter Soldier while protecting an engineer (the “no more bikinis” scar) near Odessa, TX.
So this seems like they’re saying Bucky killed Hope Pym in this 'verse.
I did catch the screen reference to Janet Pym when Natasha was accessing SHIELD files in the library… but was so caught up in the story my mind never jumped ahead to the “obvious” answer of Whodunnit.
It’s hilarious. The whole concept of What if… going all the way back to the first issue of the comic book is that these are stories that aren’t meant to be taken seriously.
Also, the idea that a decaying deity smells like flowers is cool in and of itself. There’s an appropriately mythic feel to that. Might use it in a D&D game at some point.
There were tons of the What If? comics meant to be taken seriously.
Also, in ‘the first issue of the comic-book’…Sue Storm leaves Reed for Namor, devastating the team, and leaving Spider-Man crushed for having joined the team…hilarious and fun.
But that twist doesn’t tie into the existing MCU. The Avengers stopped Loki from conquering Earth on their first mission, making the twist that without them, Loki managed it in a day. He even delivers the same speech.
…it’s Phil Coulson. For any other character it might not have worked. But this is Phil Fricken Coulson. And this is exactly the sort of thing he would say. Its entirely in character for him.
Golden Oldie (Aunt May’s Heraldname) is the ep I’d like to see - but since Galactus hasn’t been introduced in the MCU, it’s not likely we’ll see the Oldie.
Now what if Spartacus had a Piper Cub is a different story
The only point Im arguing is “The What If? comics were never meant to be taken seriously”…a great many of them were meant to be taken seriously.
Phoenix destroys the universe
Korvac destroys the universe
The Watcher shows up at Elektras funeral in the 616 to tell Matt there’s another timeline where he and Elektra are happy.
Thor meets Conan…etc…etc…
