What if Trump were to die before the November election?

17 minutes, 39 seconds, give or take 6 seconds.

The difference is that was a fight exclusively between Republican candidates. Naming a presidential nominee is just the first step in a fight against Harris in the general election. And I think the one thing that unites all the potential Republican candidates is they don’t want to see a Democrat win the election. Vance is the heir apparent so he’s somebody they can all unite behind.

I could see them all lining up behind Vance too except in my vision it is so that they can stab him in the back.

Sword fights are noble.

Y’all are misunderestimating the popularity of Vance on the right. They’re enthralled with him. That we all get baby barf at the thought of him being President makes them love him even more. I see no reason the Republicans would not coalesce around him very quickly, given the conditions of the OP.

Since at least Ronald Reagan, GOP candidates have been chosen by two criteria: 1) Name recognition and 2) manageability. I think Don Jr. would scurry into place as if nothing had happened, and the only fight would be from Ivanka and her coterie.

He’s even less qualified than Bush the Lesser was, but that’s of no consequence to the MAGAts. As long as he continues to spout exciting lies at around the fourth grade level, they’ll love him. The GOP Billionaires (Mercer, Koch, etc.) will love Don Jr. because he will be easier to manipulate than his father was.

In an organized, well-run political party, what would happen would be that the party would choose and agree on a replacement, and tell all of their electors to vote for that replacement instead of for Trump, and the electors, being loyal party functionaries, would comply. Names on the ballot might or might not be changed, depending on the laws of individual states, but since the November election technically only chooses the electors, that wouldn’t matter.

In the current Republican party, there’s no chance that a consensus would emerge that quickly, and you’d end up with different factions fighting to the bitter end, with the electors ultimately voting based on which faction they align themselves with. This chaos would probably cost the Republicans the November election, and if it didn’t, the election would go to the House, which would most likely end up tasked with choosing between two Republicans and one Democrat, and who knows what would happen then.

Two other possible scenarios: If Trump dies after November but before the Electoral College votes, then the electors are locked in place, but you’d still have the same chaos of convincing them of whom to vote for. And if Trump dies after the Electoral College votes, then that’s the one non-chaotic situation, and (if he won), it would go to his running mate.

I think I’d rather have Vance.

Sword fights would have to be above the blankets where Putin can get a good video.

Don’t tease.
