Actually, former spies were treated quite well in the Soviet Union. They’d be given decent housing, allowed to shop at special stores, get medical treatment at special hospitals, and receive other benefits most citizens didn’t have. I imagine the same is true today, especially now that Putin is in power.
I too was amazed the Pastor wasn’t whacked. They must have figured he could be an asset to them, so long as he continued his peacenik activities. (In their position, I’d have considered him more of a liability and arranged a convenient “accident.”)
