(Other than, you know, pancakes that are salty.) Just saw a Samsung refrigerator commercial (it’s this one–or at least most of the same footage–but the US voiceover is different than this, which sounds British), which, after going on about the features of the fridge, ends with the line, “… and salty pancakes.”
I’ve seen this commercial a few times, and always start zoning out halfway through. But “salty pancakes” always jars me and makes me turn back to the TV. So, what the heck are salty pancakes? I have never heard of such a thing before. Are they actually saltier than the average breakfast pancakes? Do they have salt sprinkled on top, like a salt bagel/soft pretzel? Are they just savory vs. sweet, and “salty” is being used as a stand-in for savory?
i watched with the sound off and it seemed to be any reference to salty pancakes would be a joke about how the kids and dad cooked this beautiful breakfast but someone screwed up and used salt instead of sugar or just too much salt–that kind of thing.
A look at various recipes indicates a thin unleavened crepe-type pancake, used mainly as a wrap for savory foods. So I guess that the refrigerator is full of leftovers that need using up.
Yeah, but the first recipe, titled “Salty Pancakes,” has the review after it—“Don’t let the name fool you! These are NOT salty. They are a very light crepe.”
There’s the search-junk “More Recipes Like Salty Pancakes”, none of which are for salty pancakes.
Then there are a bunch of posts/recipes where the phrase “salty pancakes” is clearly just an accident of sentence construction (“Why did she make such salty pancakes?”)
There appear to be one or two recipes for “Salty Pancakes,” that give no explanation for how they are different from any other type of pancakes (i.e., the recipe title should just be, “Pancakes”), and some recipes for southeast Asian pancakes with kimchee, etc., which I am pretty sure were not depicted at all in the commercial.
