Okay, maybe it’s not a “what is…” question. “Chastain” is the last name of a friend of mine, and for some reason I’d like to find out what the name means.
I was joking with him that the his name shares a root with the word “chastity”, and so maybe a “chastain” was a church official in charge of policing morality
Ask Brandy, she of the soccer fame who pulled her shirt off when the women’s team won (the Women’s World Cup?).
A quick Googling says that the surname Chastain means ‘chestnut tree’, from Old French chastaigne. I also found this really interesting site, which states: “Most Chastain lineage research generates a direct or indirect relationship with the French Huguenot immigrant, Pierre Chastain (1659-1728). Pierre’s descendants, as with most American families of this era, migrated westward from his original home in Virginia, both across and up and down the Appalachian Mountains, and of course, from there further westward.” Incidentally, the logo of the Pierre Chastain Association is a chestnut tree, so I think that meaning is correct.
Cool, thanks. For some reason when I Googled the name, I just got a list of sites owned by people named Chastain. I guess I might have found something if I had delved into those sites. Looks like I was going at it from the wrong angle - looking for sites that specialize in the meanings of words and names (dictionary.com didn’t have the word chastain…)
Perhaps the original Chastain was the guy who planted that chestnut tree for the famous village smithy…
Virginia? My family also comes from there. Maybe my friend’s ancestors and mine knew each other way back when.
Thanks
Actually she spells her name Brandi Chastain.

Yes, it may be funny that I remember the spelling of her name but I think I’m not the only guy who remembers attractive female soccer players who take off their shirt and wave it around after winning a resounding soccer victory.
There’s also Misery Chastain, the fictional heroine of the story-within-a-story that Paul Sheldon writes while imprisoned in Annie Wilkes’ house in Stephen King’s Misery.
I remembered some news gal named “Jane Chastain” from the 1970s. I Googled her name and found some sports chick. Maybe that’s the same one. I just remembered the name, not what she reported.
