I’m seeing this word tossed around a lot, both in real life, and of course on this message board but half the time I have no idea how it is being used. I’m seeing things in threads akin to “all those Christians who bomb clinics” etc. which are rather disturbing.
I’m a quite happy atheist/Satanist now myself, but I was at one time a practiced ascetic, I have no problem with the label “jesus freak” which is often applied to propertyless Christians.
“If I go to church on sunday, and caberet on monday, 'tain’t nobody’s business, but my own” Still Christian?
I know fundies are the ones who take all the parts of the bible (they like ) and take them literally – I know many jesus freaks are fundies, and the fundies that aren’t j. freaks I always presume are a few cards short of a full deck.
Is just anyone who has some water poured over their head and mumbles some words about accepting Jesus into their hearts automatically a Christian?
I only ask because being an atheist/satanist is kinda lonely sometimes. I know what is good, and have chosen evil, and if there does happen to be a god i’m in big trouble.
So you’re a Satanist and don’t know who Christ is? That doesn’t make sense to me. Now if you told me you were a Pagan then I could understand. How can you be an atheist/Satanist? What the hell is that? (No joke intended here.) If you are a Satanist then you believe in something. How can you believe in Satan and not in God? That doesn’t make sense. You are aware that Satan is a Christian figure right? Now the Hindu have a few demon gods but Satan belongs with the Judeo/Christian religions. So come on now which are you an atheist or a Satanist?
I’m sorry, but you seem to have misunderstood your question. Please use alt+F4 to go back and correct your OP.
Anyway, what my limited knowledge tells me is all you gotta do is say “Hey Jesus? You’re the man. Really. Let me in.” And it’s done.
Quick question:
If you’ve chosen evil, and (assumption follows) detest that which is good, how can you like being happy? Wouldn’t your state of preference be sad or angry? Even Maliciously contemptuous would seem more logical.
As for being a lonely Evil Dude from time to time, dem’s the breaks, kiddo.
No I don’t comprende. Explain please. You do realize that when you say that you are a atheist then traditionally it means you do not believe in anything. Now if you are a Satanist then I’d have to assume you believe in something, that being Satan. And since Satan is a very important figure in the Judeo/Christian religons, heck Islam too for that matter…then you do believe in something.
What was the question again? Oh yeah, what makes someone a Christian. A Christian would be someone that belives in the divinity of Jesus I would think. What does Websters say…
Declaring belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on his teachings.
I’d list them all but they are all along this vein.
Sorry lonely guy perhaps you signed up for the wrong team. Satan, Beelzebub, Old Scratch, the Dark One, the guy doesn’t have a very good rep you know. I think it has something to do with corrupting your soul. Oh that’s right you’re an atheist too, not sure you’ve got a soul.
Generally speaking, a Christian is one who professes a belief in Christ and/or his teachings. Simple as that.
I’ve studied many religions, and to be honest, Satanism has some ideas that make a lot of sense. It’s not for me, but if you are serious about being a Satanist, hey… more power to you. Freedom of religion is one thing that makes this country great.
FWIW, the brand of “Satanism” put forth by Anton Lavey (founder of the Church of Satan) has very little to do with Christianity. It is not (rather, was not intended to be) a “Hail Beelzebub, Praise Moloch” sort of thing. Rather it was created as an anthesis to Christianity, not Christ.
It is a religion of selfishness instead of selflessness, of personal achievement instead of suborning oneself to another’s will. And it’s a fundamentally libertarian set of beliefs, as it calls for respecting the rights of others to run their own lives. “An it harm no one . . .”
We now return you to your regularly scheduled Great Debate.
Um… you seem to be presuming that everyone lives in the religious vacuum – that if some one is a theist there is automatically a god(s), and if someone is an atheist there austomatically isn’t a god. I don’t really think god’s existence is automatically left up to my momentary whim, nor would I presume that just because I don’t think there isn’t a god, everyone else who thinks there is a god is automatically insane, I am simply willing to give them the benifit of the doubt and state that were there a god, I’m not on his side of the equation. I don’t think most people are, but perhaps my frankness is confusing to you.
Yeah, I’ve heard of old Anton LeVay, cool looking guy dark beard, hard dark eyes.
jmullaney…that is not what you said…quote…
“I know what is good and have chosen evil. If there does happen to be a god I’m in big trouble.”

Now you say…

No dear dark one…I just wanted to know what you were driving at other than to troll for another Christian bashing thread. Pull up the archive there are dozens of them, we didn’t need another. But when you came out with the atheist/Satanism thing I just wanted to know what the hell you were talking about? That’s all. Are you a follower of Anton Levay? Or do you practice Satanism, a la Marilyn Manson or Ozzie. Explain please, I’m interested in the tenents of your belief system.
Anyway, back to the OT, I just mean, from the view of the “Other” (i.e. someone else) who is a christian, I’m not, therefore I must be on the side of evil, therefore, I have always presumed, a satanist by default. I really don’t know of a better word for it, but if you can think of one, I’d love to know what it is so as to avoid this confusion in the future. I know of Levay, et al., but I think I basically just live my life with no moral compass whatsoever. No bat head biting or anything so interesting.
So, instead of being ACTIVELY evil, you just prefer to kinda meander through life, doing what you want to?
I don’t know what the word for it is, but I know it’s not Satanist. I would lean toward Atheist, but who am I to define you?
The most important question is: Do you actually think to yourself something like, “I’m choosing to do what I want instead of the norm,” or do you just do what you like?
I don’t know you, but I’m willing to bet you’re not telling the whole truth here.
If, by “moral compass,” you mean a guide or instruction manual (as with the Bible, the Qu’ran, the Baghavad Gita), then I get you.
But I suspect you have a basis for determining right from wrong. How do you feel about murder? Wrong? Or do you only refrain from killing people because it’s illegal? HOw about assault? Rape? Theft?
