What is a gallant? (in chemical formulation terms)

This is actually a work related question. I am dealing with a fluid containing several additives in it. One of the additives is a cellulose derivative and it’s purpose is described simply as a “gallant”. Google hasn’t turned up a clear definition of this term but it did give me a few usage examples. My first thought is that its meaning is something similar to a thickening, or possibly a suspending agent, since those are typical uses for cellulose.

I typically don’t view the SDMB as a technical forum, but I’ve found all kinds of useful (and otherwise) info on here before, so what the hell.

I did a quick google and every example that was thrown up (mainly patents) it seemed is was simply a misspelling of gellant e.g. something that helps it gel

Yes, a Goofus on Gellant seems the most likely explanation here.

Ah, I bet that’s it. Just to check, I typed in gellant in MS Word and it autocorrects to gallant. That probably explains why gallant is used throughout the document.
Thanks!
