What is a Grammar School?

In this thread ** Aro ** states:

In Australia, “Grammar Schools” are private high schools, that can be non-denominational or aligned to a certain religion. Schools such as Sydney, Melborne and Brisbane Grammar are generally regarded as pretty prestigious and are single-sex members of the respective GPS (Great Public Schools) associations in their respective states. They are boys schools, although there are Girls Grammar schools and co-ed Grammar Schools.

I understand that the term in the US applies to primary schools.

From ** Aro’s ** quote above, I understand that the term means something different in the UK.

Anyone know the answer?

See here. Briefly, it’s a state school for ages approx. 12-18, catering for pupils selected for academic ability by a test at age 11.
