What is a Greek Restaurant "Lamb Log" made out of?

What is the composition of the “Lamb Log” commonly seen mounted vertically on a spit in Greek Restaurants? This is usually sliced thin to go into Gyros and sandwiches and stuff. Obviously its processed meat of some sort that purports to be lamb, but with what else? Is it like a giant hot dog?

Ahhh Doner kebab! My mouth is watering now.

It’s ground lamb with herbs, compressed into a large cylinder, spit roasted, left unrefrigerated overnight once or maybe twice between roastings.

So it’s actually not an elephants leg, then? Oh so disappointing…

That clears up a lifelong question: what part of a lamb is shaped like a cone?

IMHO, not enough meats come in cone format.

I call it a “meat cone”. I think the meat is beef that is flavored like lamb with other flavors and fillers. Anyone have the nutrition info on it?

  1. What meat is used in a gyros?
  • Gyro meat consists of a blend of beef and lamb with Mediterranean spices. Grecian Delight® also manufactures an all beef gyros as well as chicken gyros. top of page
