What is ASSUMED about your fandom?

As someone who was a decent fan of Star Trek: Deep Space 9, and who is a devoted (read: geeky) fan of South Park, The Wire, and Firefly, it’s assumed that I am also a Star Trek geek, by those for whom it’s negative OR positive connotation.

Note to others: Interest in Star Trek + geekiness in other things does not mean I will be able to understand references to what Captain Kirk did on Altair IV with a 4 breasted she-devil! I only saw 3-4 Original Series episodes, for chrissakes!

As a person who works in Middle School Education in Central Florida, it’s assumed that I sleep with my students.
Nothing could be further than the truth. First off, have you SMELLED any Middle Schoolers recently? After talking to a failing 6th grader yesterday, I had to spray my office with Country Scent Lysol  Secondly, when I have sex, I want someone who knows what they are doing.

Just here to feed the straight lines.

As a Mets fan, it’s assumed that I loathe the Yankees. It’s simply not true. I merely harbor a strong dislike for the Yankees.

I was actually ok with them till 2000 rolled around.

I am a fan of the band Phish. I’ve seen over 60 shows, and yet somehow I don’t do drugs (or need them to appreciate a good jam) and I do manage to bathe on a regular basis.

Good point, many think as I Yankee fan I hate the Mets. I don’t, I really don’t, I just don’t want them doing better than my Yanks.

People also assume I hate the Red Sox, that one is 100% true. I still don’t like Clemens or Pedro to this day. I did the have highest respect for Yaz & Varitek however.

I have heard of that team. In the UK it’s pronounced

“Manchester United” or just Scum for short

That all lesbians go apeshit for the Indigo Girls. I, myself, do not.

You forgot “alcoholic” and “OMG devil worshipp0r!!!111”.

You can also have some fun with the sub-genres, as in…

Black Metal - cat-sacrificing neo-nazis*

Thrash Metal - beer-swilling tough guys in band shirts

Prog Metal - snobs

Death Metal and Grindcore - nutjobs

Pagan/Viking Metal - mead-swilling neo-nazis*

Melodic Power Metal - fantasy nerds

*While the fact that unfortunately, a few nazi twats have indeed found their way into the metal scene does suck yak balls through a straw, generalizations and prejudice on the subject piss me off even more. Yes, certain fucking morons equate ALL viking and black metal with National Socialism. And then spew that crap on forums and letters to magazines. If you even did a tiny bit of research, you’d find out your claims are simply not true, you ignorant, lazy shits. Your ignorance is dangerous, you twats!
Hijack/rant over.

My acquaintances are always thrown for a loop when I mention that I love D&D. “But you’re a girl! And you don’t live in your parents’ basement!”

Seems like there’s a few of us come up against this one!

Also,

as a Doctor Who fan, I am male (no), gay (no), live in my parents basement (no), socially awkward (no)

as a female gamer, I am either totally hot and want to screw all male gamers (you wish) or I’m a spotty (no) fat (yes) teenager (no)

Because I have been a rabid LOTR fan for years & years, people assume I like all fantasy. No. and I got bored with/disliked Harry Potter, Narnia, and Golden Compass series all after one book each. I’ll give any genre/type of book a try. Do not assume because I love Tolkien that I like all fantasy!

Huh, apparently the perfect woman does exist.

That as a fan of the Grateful Dead, I automatically love every single thing they recorded beyond reason, that I will only listen to Grateful Dead music and nothing else, that I am utterly indiscriminatory in my love for them. The truth is, while some records they put out were excellent, some were fairly ‘meh’ and some were just plain bad. Likewise, some Dead shows I saw were great, great fun concerts, some were sloppy.

I don’t think that’s an assumption so much as an intense hope. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, you admit that you’ve worn eyeliner and greasepaint?

I played (and still do on occassion) D&D.
My past - must have been a loser without a date. Nope, lucky enough to be Team Captain for the football team, and had a good enough dating life in high school to fondly remember it.
My present - I must be a greasy programmer. Nope, I run sales & marketing for technology companies instead. I DO remember quipping to one of our engineers that he needed to roll a 20 to make a dex save when juggling a donut and coffee. His eyes bugged out and we get along great now.
My other present - I am a white male Deacon and a Scoutmaster. I MUST be raving homophobe. Nothing could be further from the truth. My goal is to make change from within, not to tear down the organization.

I enjoy reading graphic novels: Sandman, Fables, V for Vendetta, and Watchmen, for example.

This does not mean that I care about superheroes, what “universe” they’re inhabiting, what their powers are, or whether Publisher X’s Magna-Man could beat Publisher Y’s Crushinator in a fair fight. Nor does it mean I care about Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, the Silver Age, the Golden Age, Marvel, or DC. I have no interest in comic book conventions, dressing up as a superhero character, or in writing “fanfic.” As far as I’m concerned, the Simpson’s Comic Book Guy is an amusing character on a popular TV show, and not something I aspire to being.

I enjoy good thought-provoking stories, well told and illustrated, and that’s it.

Right there with you.

In a similar vein:

As a d+d and wargamer, I automatically like comics. I’m not against the idea of the graphic novel format, although there are only one or two I like, but monthly comics per se are just superpowered soap opera.

As an anime fan of a certain age, it was assumed that I liked/loved tentacle porn, Ninja Scroll and Akira.

Somehow it is apparently impossible for most people to believe that someone can read and enjoy both SF/Fantasy and Romance genre fiction. Most of the time people seem to assume it’s like matter/anti-matter.
