Why would you ever have thought such a thing? People are people, all around the world, with all the virtues and faults that come with humanity. There’s no monopoly on evil, or on good, for that matter.
Well, I did. I thought being under seige all the time kind of kept them more on the straight and narrow. I knew Israelis weren’t perfect, but the notion that they’re going through a thousand sex slaves a year casts them in a diferent light entirely. I mean, it’s one thing to be defending the old kibbutz or Jerusalem, but seems like they’re also defending the old slave pen.
That was just during the bus drivers’ strike.
Also different: An occasional private fantasy versus a creepy obssession regularly trotted out in front of strangers long after one been told by many of them that they find the depth of his fixation disturbing.
Falafel.
Little known fact.
Look what it did to Bill O’Reilly.
Well, Israel is nation of 6.3 million people, you know. While obviously it’s terrible and a disgrace that it’s happening, it’s not like Israel is some giant slave market.
Like other people have said, trafficking in persons is a global problem. In Israel, specifically, a lot of the sex trade is organized and carried out by the Russian mob. When the Soviet Union fell, a lot of Russian Jews and people claiming to be Russian Jews came to Israel. Unfortunately, while most of them were honest citizens, the Russian mob also came, and used their superior connections and money to take over the Israeli underworld.
They’re the ones who are responsible for most of this…they bring the girls in from Russia and the other countries of the former Soviet Union, and smuggle them across the Egyptian border.
To its credit, Israel is aware of the problem and taking steps to fight trafficing, as law year’s parliamentary investigation referenced in the article indicates. But it’s still a problem to fight, in part because most of the women involved are in the country illegally, scared of the authorities, and don’t speak Hebrew, so they’re discouraged from seeking help. And, since the people responsible for the trafficking do it as part of a greater criminal organization, in some cases they have the money to corrupt policemen and judges.
A fairly good number of those “stinky-looking guys in uniforms” are *chayalot * .
Who many think are rather hot looking actually.
I know that the USA also has had sex-slave problems. But the figures from the USA are under 15K, whilst Isreal, with only 1/50th the population of the USA would seem to have a much bigger problem with that 5000 figure.
However, from the numbers I have seen (no cites, seaching for anything with “sex” in it is dicey) the Saudis have the biggest problem with sex-slavery.
You do understand that I’m against sex slavery, right Furt? Look at my hand, how many fingers am I holding up? Furt? Furt? Anybody home?
You’re being totally disingenuous with regard to what I was saying. See? I addressed this point in post 10. I was completely clear in that our problems don’t justify theirs. You’re just looking to argue with some imaginary point.
Zomg! Stop lying! Those farging icehole sexist pigs don’t have compulsory military service for men and women! Every sexist knows that women can’t shoot and stuff, duh!
See, those women are really sex workers. Hey, everyone has their kink. Don’t judge.
Johns should be demanding free-range, cage-free hookers. Vote with your wallets, fellas.
I’ve always wondered about this whole sex slave trafficking thing. It seems to me that all the machinations involved with imprisoning someone, forcing them to be sex workers, and hiding it from the law would be more costly and troublesome than just paying free-will workers a fair wage. Obviously, I haven’t had to sit down and actually do the math on this, so maybe I’m completely off-base.
damn.
When’s the next flight to Israel?
You’re right, I didn’t address the point directly, but I will.
You’re right, sex slavery is a worldwide phenomenon. Asia probably has more of it than the middle East on a numerical basis, just because they have so much more people on a numerical basis.
That said, the Middle East is, so far as I can be, the unchallenged CAPITAL of sexist piggery. Hell, they still stone women to death for adultery in some countries there. Pakistan is hotly debating whether or not to dump a law whereby, if a woman is raped she has to find four men to say they actually witnessed the rape, and by witnessed we mean saw the penetration. If she can’t manage this and still makes a rape accusation, she is accused of zina, consensual sex with someone other than your husband, and held without bail. If convicted of zina she is killed. Reports are women in jail on zina charges get raped a lot. Then you got your honor killings in places like Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, etc.
Now I’ll grant you that there are millions of middle eastern moderates out there who probably think this is as awful as I do.
whoops, work calls more later.
Pakistan is not in the Middle East.
And I find it creepy and disturbing that you’d equate BDSM with actual rape and exploitation. Who do you think we are?
You know, I agree. Furt, your fixation on Evil Captor needs to stay inside your head. Please stop posting about him; it’s freaking the rest of us out.
I’ll be in my bunk.
And, just as importantly, how can I create a “disturbance” on the plane and have to be “taken into custody?” leer
