What is press exemption?

What is media or press exemption exactly? I’ve looked online and found rather vague references to it, but nothing concise. I really want to know what it is and how it affects the political process.

Thanks in advance

You might have better luck if you give some context. “press exemption” is pretty vague, and I could imagine a bunch of things it could apply.

Maybe you could give the quote that made you wonder what it meant?

Were you watching Stephen Colbert last night?

Could you give us an example?

That was it! And I can’t remember what exactly what the reference was, but it intriqued me, however, this morning it was just erased outa my middle aged brain.

He was discussing the rules that apply if a news source mentions PACs. If I have this right, news reporting would not be considered a donation to a PAC, while commentary would be.

The situation Stephen was making fun was that his corporate overlords at Viacom don’t want him to start his “ColbertPAC” because Viacom would be giving it support by providing him with airtime. However, if Stephen claims he is using the “press exemption” when mentioning the PAC on the Report, he can claim Viacom isn’t directly supporting the PAC.

Stephen pointed out that Dick Morris goes on Fox News and flogs his PAC, but this is “ok” for the overlords at Fox because of the “press exemption”.

The unstated difference is that Fox and Dick Morris’ PAC presumably have similar political goals, Viacom and Stephen Colbert, not so much.
ETA: Huh…weird kerning RE: “PA”. Just me?

The PA spacing doesn’t match the AC spacing very well. The kerning is probably calculated only on letter pairs.

Thank you all very much! Y’all rock!
