cnn.com has taken the picture down, but it’s still in the “gallery” section under the Queen Mum’s funeral coverage. Princess Anne is seen in the procession wearing what appears to be a military uniform with medals and a cap. I looked up her official pages at the Royal Family’s website ( http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page418.asp ), and it says nothing about any military service.

So what is she wearing, and why?

Anne did do some military training during the late 60s or early 70s, but most likely she’s wearing the uniform appropriate to being honorary colonel-in-chief of some regiment. Most of the royal family are patrons of particular regiments in the British Army, and in general are made the honorary commanding officer of that regiment.
