what is significance of 'bauhaus'

what is the significance of the word ‘bauhaus’. not the band, tho. i want to use the word to impress people.

It’s German for “building house”.

It was a school of architecture and design developed in Germany during the 1920’s and 30’s. This page has a brief summary.

oh, yess. that will do me just fine!
thanks

It is the reason why modern city centers are so hideous and modern apartment complexes are so inhuman.

It is the name of a building goods supply house chain here in Germany.

Damn! I was going to post this!! You can walk into a Bauhaus and actually buy everything you need to make a DIY house of your own! Everything!!

“But he would work late at the Bauhaus
And only came home now and then
She said ‘What am I running, a Chowhouse?
It’s time to change partners again!’”

—Tom Lehrer’s “Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel” (singing about Walter Gropius)

I might add, the BAUHAUS was a school of design…interestingly, in the 16 years of its existance, nobody ever seems to have graduated from it!! It was an extremely involved course, involving ceramics, painting, design, pottery, and modern dance. But it seems to have had either a high dropout rate,or an impossibly long carriculum!

CalMeacham I, too had that running thru my head after reading the thread title
