What is that contraption in "Will & Grace"?

In Will and Grace’s living room, there is some object that I can’t identify. It’s a large metallic sphere mounted on some type of wooden tripod. It looks like it could be a light fixture or a piece of surveying equipment. (It is found in most episodes, I think, throughout many of the seasons. It is usually standing on the floor against the back wall, near the bookshelves.)

Can anyone tell me what that is?

Isn’t it just a floor lamp mounted on a wooden tripod similar to this ?

Sounds like a globe.

The only thing I can find so far is from Moviemistakes.com, it is described simply an ornamental silver ball.

Visible crew/equipment: In most of Season One at least (choosing a specific moment here), Will and Grace have a large ornamental silver ball in their living room, which always reflects the studio lights and the fact that there is no fourth wall to the apartment.

Is it the thing in the pic labled living room ? I can’t tell what it is, but I bet someone will know.

I saw that picture, but couldn’t see it clearly enough to id whatever it is.

Could it be some type of flash unit for an antique camera?

Never mind that, I want to know who painted that god-awful sad-clown-sans-makeup picture that’s by the fireplace and why in umpteen years they never burned those damn vanilla ball candles on the coffee table. Seriously, I hate that picture and I hate those candles.

Yes, the thing is in the pic labeled “living room,” above and to the right of the seated man’s head, between the painting and the bookshelves.

I looked through some of the DVDs, and from the side it looks like it is a concave hemisphere open towards us (rather than a solid sphere).

It looks almost like a spotlight.

I’m guessing it is what is called a lawn ball or a gazing ball.
