what Is the Architectural Term for This Window Style?

I’m asking about windows that project out past the wall of the house- day a box-shaped from, which sticks out about 12 inches, witha little roof on the top?
Are they hard to install? I like the look of them-maybe next spring Ill put a few in.

I believe that the term you are looking for is either a bay or an *oriel * window. From what I can determine, bay windows go the full height of the floor on which they are installed, while oriel windows are raised up from the floor. Oriels have the roof on top; bay windows can have a roof too, or they can rise several stories.

If you were looking for something similar to the bay window, but curved instead of rectangular, that is a bow window.

A bay window proper is at “normal window height” but the area beneath it is included “within the house” by being properly framed and insulated, and then a window seat installed which lifts to access a storage area beneath it, in the framed area from floor to seat level.
