What is the argument in favor of gay marriage?

Why should gay marriage be legalized?

Why should women be allowed to vote? Why should blacks be able to eat in the same establishments as whites? Why should Jews be allowed to own property?

Fairness, justice, personal freedom, and the fact that there is no good reason not to have it.

They’re people. People get married.

These words from the Declaration of Independence state the case pretty well:

We hold these truths to be self-evident:

That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

I have never understood the arguement from rights for gay marriage. A gay individual has the exact same right as a straight man to marry a woman who agrees to marry him, even though this may not be what he wishes to do.

Note: I dont think marriage should be an issue of Government, and the above is more humurous than factual.

Oh, please, that’s like telling, say, black men they are allowed to marry only if the woman is hideously ugly, then claiming they have equal rights.

And arguments in support of miscegenation laws said that a black man had just the same right to marry a woman of the same race as a white man did, even if that might not be what he wished to do.

Or, as the law in many states was in the early 20th Century, he could marry any woman he wanted, as long as she wasn’t white.

My support for gay marriage is based on the fact that some people want it, and it will not harm or effect me in any way if they get it.

That’s enough for me to support it. But if it were not enough for some reason, then I would support it because it’s just unfair for people who love each other not be allowed to be married.

I really don’t truly understand why the first point isn’t enough for people to support it, let alone the second.

When I was a boy, the law said, “Those are our women, and you niggers can’t marry them.” The laws against interracial marriage were not struck down until the early 1960s.

Now, the song goes, “Those are our women, and you lesbians can’t marry them.”

How long will we continue to persecute some people for their God-given sexuality?

And straight people will (or should) have the exact same rights as gays to marry somebody of the same sex, even though this may not be what he or she wishes to do.

Just as gays have a right they don’t want, any new right created will also apply to straights, even if they don’t want it. As far as I know, nobody is proposing a gay test being required before a gay marriage.

actually its not. The statement I made actually does make them have equal rights, because a straight man cant marry another man either, which makes them have equal rights. Your forcing a black man to only marry an ugly woman, where a white man can marry any woman he wants.

The truth is if your going to make a law you have to make it so that a straight man can marry another straight man if he so desires or you are limiting the rights of the straight man.

I’m not usually a fan of the Constitution, but this pretty much sums up my position on gay marriage. Homosexuals are equal to heterosexuals, and each individual has the same entitlement to the pursuit of happiness as anyone else. If that involves marriage, then that’s fine. If it involves divorce, that’s fine too.

And how would gay marriage stop this ? It’s not like there’s a test for gayness.

Well, since the term “gay marriage” is simply popular shorthand for “same sex marriage,” then the accommodation under law would allow two straight men to marry and there would be no suppression of rights.

Yep, that sums up my position, too.

Who on the gay marraige side is proposing that straight men should not be able to marry straight men? Name one legislative proposal or one advocate for same-sex unions who has asked for such an idiotic exception.
