What is the best song that begins with the letter S? See rules in OP. Polls will appear in this thread

Correct on both counts, both are ineligible. Thanks, @Jeff_Lichtman.

Similarly,

…is not eligible as it begins with a parenthesis.

Limit of 3 songs per person, they may be submitted in more than one post.

Suggestions are allowed if you are already at your max. “Sloop John B.” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down” are both solid choices and not yet officially submitted.

mmm

20 slots remain.

mmm

  • Sat in Your Lap - Kate Bush
  • Some Are - David Bowie
  • Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Jerome Kern

This looks like another instance of submitting a composer rather than an artist. I can’t find any indication that Kern actually performed / released the song as an artist.

mmm

Sorry.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - The Platters

Gotcha.

Sober-Pink
Sitting on the dock of the bay-Otis Redding
Simple Man-Lynard Skynard

There are way too many to choose from and nobody should hold me to just these three.

You’re in luck - (Sittin’ on the) Dock of the Bay is ineligible.

See post #41.

Also see OP.

mmm

Sorry, didn’t realize “sittin’on the” was in parentheses.

I guess that will have to wait for the D list.

I’m confused-one post says a title which begins with parenthesis is eligible, but this one and the OP indicate they they aren’t.

Titles that begin with punctuation are NOT eligible.

I’m not seeing where I indicated that they are.

mmm

Not a problem.

And actually, Dock of the Bay won’t belong in the D thread either.

Spoiler: There will be a thread for titles that begin with a punctuation mark.

mmm

Shangri-La - The Kinks
Saturday In the Park - Chicago
Sanctuary - Daniel Amos

Sunny - Bobby Hebb
Super Freak - Rick James
Slip sliding away - Paul Simon

Sloop John B - Beach Boys

Now it’s official.

Room for 8 more.

mmm

I’ve already had my three contributions, but I think one classic is still missing:

Sunday Morning - The Velvet Underground

Ooh, good one. I used to sing that to myself on the way in to work when I had to work a Sunday.

mmm

The OP rules are a bit ambiguous. Do they mean ‘best song’ or ‘best performance of a song’?

Stardust is of course by the great Hoagy Carmichael; he has performed it himself on occasion.

I actually often prefer the composer’s version of songs when available!

No love for Sunday Will Never Be the Same - Spanky and Our Gang?
