Silent Running, Mike & the Mechanics
That reminded me of the probably greatest one-side prog rock song of all time, “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis. Also a glaring omission.
Or, I could go the pop route and nominate The Melvins - “Pure Digital Silence” when the Ps come around. Though, I don’t think I will. The last time I listened to it, it mostly sounded like tinnitus mixed with a hockey game.
If we’re still doing ‘S’ songs that got overlooked…
So What - Miles Davis
Well, I am.
She Bop, Cyndi Lauper.
Sure, keep them coming.
I’ve always liked “Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word” by Elton John.
mmm
Stacy’s Mom, Fountains of Wayne
Sabotage- Beastie Boys
Final poll – What is the best S song? Select up to 3.
- September – Earth, Wind and Fire
- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles
- Sing, Sing, Sing – Benny Goodman
- Sloop John B. – The Beach Boys
- Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
- Something – The Beatles
- The Sound of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel
- Space Oddity – David Bowie
- Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
- Sultans of Swing – Dire Straits
- Superstition – Stevie Wonder
- Sympathy for the Devil – The Rolling Stones
Something by George Harrison.
Picking those last three was tough.
Wow, looks like Stairway’s luster has definitely dimmed-I guess from overexposure, natch.
Yeah, looks like that song has a bustle in its hedgerow.
Also, I loves me some Bowie, but I’ve always thought Space Oddity was overrated. And I am very surprised to see September in the top ten.
mmm
Am I right in thinking that top ten list doesn’t include a single female singer? Am I right in thinking it doesn’t include a single song recorded in the last quarter century?
If so, I’m not quite sure what that says about us.
Eh, previous final polls had female singers.
(but no songs from this millennium)
mmm
We’re old, modern music is crap, and kids should get off our lawn.
Also, the Number One song in the C poll had not just one, but two Mamas on vocals.
mmm
The surprising one to me is Sgt. Pepper; it’s practically a TV theme song (Hey Hey We’re the Monkees is better). Yet, Strawberry Fields Forever wasn’t even nominated until after the polls were posted. We’re not just old; we have serious memory issues.
Remember that when the Hs roll around.
mmm
Hah!
I won’t say more about this, beyond this post. But this experience is kind of a great metaphor for hiring people in America, where nobody is intentionally discriminating, but because the demographic of people making the choices are so skewed, the results end up skewed. It may be worth folks keeping that in mind in future polls and making an effort at least to consider female musicians and modern musicians.
And that’s all! Thanks for organizing these polls, @Mean_Mr.Mustard ; they’re pretty fun to read and participate in.
