What is the best time to study?

I could be wrong but I seem to recall hearing (possibly on discovery) that studying right before you sleep or doing your homework right before you sleep will help to retain that information.

If this is not the case, has there been an actual study done to find out when the best time for doing homework and/or studying?

Would this differ depending on if your in elementary, middle school, high school, or college?

It depends on the individual, so there’s no factual answer.

Actually there are some factual answers to this question. As an academic advisor I instruct students on different theories of studying that will help them hone their study-savvy-skills.

This is a good link with some valuable information in it about time management and studying techniques, and times.

I used to run a research project with one of my classes where we would have different groups study in different ways. And then take a mock exam.

The unbrella technique usually worked out the best for most students. Picture an umbrella. One side is rounded like this ->‘U’
and where it is attached there are shorter ‘u’ shapes inbetween where the wire attaches to the fabric. It is tried and true that people will remember strings of things at the beginning of when they start to study and at the very end. So this method teached students to study in shorter intervals. Maybe 15 minutes on psych, 15 minutues on Chem, 15 minutes on baskett weaving…then continue, back to the psych…You will learn more and absorb more using this method than you previously thought possible.

The unbrella technique is intresting.

I’ve also heard that studying right before sleeping is most beneficial. If I recall correctly, I think it has something to do with how REM sleep facilitates memory.

I did a quick search on the PsychInfo database and wasn’t able to find anything except how deprivation of REM sleep negatively affects memory and learning. Can anyone cite any studies that proves/disproves it being more beneficial to study before bed?

i get the whole idea about why the umbrella technique would work, but why is it called the umbrella technique? I’m not getting the picture of the umbrella and how that relates to the actual technique
